Christine J. Opersteny

Funeral Home: Dignity Memorial Funeral Chapel College Station
Christine J. Opersteny, 83, devoted daughter, aunt, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at her home in College Station.

Christine was born and raised in Bryan, TX. Her parents owned and operated a variety store in the “North Gate” area near Texas A&M University.

Christine had a successful 41-year career at Texas A&M University from 1949 until 1990. Of note, she served as the secretary to former Texas A&M President Dr. Jarvis Miller during his tenure at the university.

After her employment at A&M, she remained in the College Station area and was an active member at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. She also passionately supported the wide-ranging endeavors of her 4 nephews in science, sports, and music, but most importantly, taught them how to become responsible and caring adults by being their “second mother.”

Regardless of one’s affiliation with Christine, one trait resonated soundly throughout her life---she treated all of her acquaintances as if they were family. Friends, co-workers, caregivers (and even former presidents of Texas A&M), would attest that she treated every individual with respect and put their needs first before her own.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Albina Opersteny and her brother, Albert Joseph Opersteny. Christine is survived by 4 nephews, Robert, Donald, Richard, and Douglas Opersteny; 5 grandnieces, 2 grandnephews, and her dearest and closest friend, June F. Cooper.

A Rosary Service for Christine will be recited at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, December 1, 2013, followed by visitation from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Chapel, 2901 Texas Avenue South, College Station, Texas 77845. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday December 2, 2013, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 2541 Earl Rudder Freeway, College Station, TX 77845. Interment will follow at College Station City Cemetery.
