November 25, 1926 – November 30, 2013
Charlotte Milstrey Garrett passed away peacefully in Bryan, Texas on Saturday, November 30. She was 87 years old.
Charlotte, lovingly known as Charlie, was born in Hackensack, NJ. She attended Hackensack High and graduated from New Jersey State Teachers College at Trenton, with the dream of becoming a teacher and having a family.
In Dec of 1952, she married John B. Garrett of Abilene, Texas, and they had four children: Ann, John, David, and William (Bill); all born in New Jersey. The family spent many summers enjoying the Jersey Shore at Beach Haven West. Raising her children was one of the greatest joys of her life.
John worked for Shell Oil Co. and in 1970 the family relocated to Houston, during the oil boom in Texas. Charlie taught elementary school for 22 years and she and John were active members of Fair Haven United Methodist Church for more than 40 years. In 1992, Charlie and John retired and moved to Katy, Texas and in 2009 they moved to Bryan, Texas.
During their retirement, Charlie and John discovered cruise ship traveling and embarked on 47 cruises. They went all over the world together, including eastern and western Europe, China, and crossing both the Arctic and Antarctic circles.
Charlie was “a peach” and will truly be missed. Her positive, uplifting attitude about life was infectious, as was her always present smile and laughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 2011 and is survived by her sister, Dee, of Newton, NJ; brother Roger, of Denver, CO; daughter and son-in-law Ann and Pete Narkiewicz of Ben Salem, PA; sons and daughters-in-law John and Linda Garrett of McKinney, TX, David and Cathy Garrett of Grapevine, TX, Bill and Carie Garrett of College Station, TX; and grandchildren Dan Narkiewicz, Zoe Garrett, Brian Garrett, Michael Garrett, Kelly Garrett, Dillon Garrett, and Sydney Garrett.
A Memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 6, 2013 at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home, 3001 South College Avenue, in Bryan, Texas. 979-822-3717
