Dr. Nancy Elizabeth Roberts, 84, of Bryan, passed away Monday, March 10, 2014 at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Funeral Services are scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 15, 2014 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 906 George Bush Drive in College Station with Reverend Doctor Rhoda Montgomery officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 A.M. to service time at the church. Interment will follow at Bryan City Cemetery, under the direction of Memorial Funeral Chapel.
Nancy was born November 26, 1929 in Rochester, New York to Lorma Burleigh and William Frederik Merz and grew up and graduated from high school in Binghamton, N.Y. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech and Communications from Michigan State followed by her Master’s Degree and Teacher’s Certification in Elementary Education from Syracuse University. In 1957, Nancy married the love of her life, Richard and they soon moved to Houston, Texas.
In 1963, Nancy and Richard moved to Bryan, when Richard started his own business, Central Texas Air Conditioning Company. Nancy then completed her education when she received her Doctorate Degree in Educational Psychology from Texas A&M University. She taught at St. Michaels Academy and at Texas A&M University while working on her Doctorate Degree. She then taught at Blinn College in Bryan, and at the special request of Dr. William Nash, worked at the Gifted and Talented Institute at Texas A&M Galveston. She spent several years traveling to the Austin School for the Blind to do readings for “Books for the Blind” and she is a published author of children's stories and poems. She also was a principle partner in Youth Education Services consultant firm.
Nancy felt her greatest contribution to society was her opportunity to mold young parents through her child psychology classes.
She was along time member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William Merz; and one sister, June Garfield.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Richard Roberts of Bryan; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Theodore Roberts of Lago Vista, Texas, Daniel and Christina Roberts of Katy, Texas, and William Roberts of Seattle, Wa.; along with a host of friends.
