On April 18, 2014, Annie “Pearl” (Gardner) Mitchell departed this life. Her cremains will be placed near her father Jesse Gardner, at Greater Riverside Cemetery in Hearne.
Born December 26, 1941 to Jesse and Gladys (Williams) Gardner, Pearl graduated from Blackshear High School in 1961.
Her aunt, Beulah Drones along with cousins, Bernice Drones Butler and John Anna Drones Myles, helped relocate Pearl to San Francisco, where she earned her Associate's Degree in Social Work.
She moved to Richmond, Calif., and worked at Richmond Unified
School District for more than 25 years. She was a member of Old Elam Missionary Baptist Church in Hearne, then St. John's Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond.
Years after retiring Pearl moved to College Station to be near her
brother, Dorsey Gardner.
Her parents; her son, Kevin John Gardner; sisters, Doris Gardner Garrett, Annie Mae Staten and Bertha Henry; and brothers, Johnny
Gardner and Dorsey Gardner, all preceded Pearl in death.
Survivors include two special nephews, Karlton Gardner of Las Vegas and Vernon Malik Garrett of Houston; aunt, Mattie Vera Hutchins of Hearne; nieces, Martha Wade of Hearne, Jewel Mathews and Ulysses of Big Springs and Della Chapman of Lawton, Okla.; nephews, Marvin Staten and wife Ruby of Houston and Melvin Staten of Jennings, La.; cousins, Bernice Drones Butler and John Anna Drones Myles, both of San Francisco, Gloria Holmes of College Station, Robbie Muckelroy of Hearne and Leslie Coby of Fresno; and numerous other family and friends.
