A pair of small communities took different paths during Saturday night's elections.

In Washington County, residents in the community of Chappell Hill decided against incorporation. Of the 201 votes cast, 74 percent went against the idea of incorporation.

A secondary vote for a mayor was null and void because the incorporation did not pass.

In Grimes County, it was a different story for Iola, which last year decided to incorporate. Saturday was the new city's first elections.

Christina Stover, who was a major player in the incorporation efforts, won the city's mayoral election.

Five city council members were also decided: Curtis Darby, Gene Hayes, Jerry Norman, Laura Carter Carabajal and Becky Wren Evans.

Also of note in Iola, a school bond proposition worth $10 million failed by a 178-166 vote.

I would like for the Iola community to wake up and think about the future of our children. If the school board had advertised more on getting everyone to come do a walk thru and see how crowded our classrooms are. It seems everyone is focused more on the new football forgetting that we need a new elementary school. I feel it was up to the school board to let the people know what this bond election would do for the school. I think that the school board has let the people of this fine community in the dark. However if the people in this community want to compalin they need to get more involved in the school. I have noticed they complain about a new football field but everyone will attend those games. I don't think this bond election should have been about a new football but the eduction of our children. Have more people attend those board meetings. Vote yes in November.

I know we should not focus on the football field and sports and focus on our childrens futures, but how do you expect us to do this when we built a big nice baseball field and nothing was given to our students futures such as books, science labs and lunch rooms. It is not the parents who are focusing on sports it is the school. So, why was the money spent on a huge baseball facility? I think everyone needs to rethink the bond and what it really means for our kids. until someone can explain to me in more detail about the bond, my vote will be "NO" again in November.

This is totally off the subject, I know, but has anyone heard about the Anderson School District vote for a bond? I never did hear the results. I guess because I was out of town for Mother's Day.

If those who are complaining about more lunchroom space...did any of you come to the community held meetings? there were walk thru on both...we are trying to make bigger class rooms, adequate science labs,a second lunch room and gym, all of which will help further the education of our kids! that is what is was all about...If we don't pass this, we fail our kids!! VOTE YES FOR EDUCATION !!!! Ask how little of the bond was for the football field....

The people of Iola are missing the point. It's not about getting a new football field - it's about providing our children with an environment to learn and responding to the growth that we are already seeing in our community. Moving the football is just the best option to keep everything on the same campus and allow greater efficiency. It is a well thought out plan, that the residents of Iola got too caught up in thinking about the football field and a termite infested gym. This is about our children and preparing for their future. We'll see this again in November, but for probably more money. I'll vote yes again!!

I understand that we need to make changes to the school. However we need to focus on the elementary and not the high school. Why do we need a new football field. They need to get the small children away from the bigger children and stop focusing all on sports. We have our children scrammbling to eat every day because they only have a few minutes to eat. I fwe had a second lunchroom for the elementary kids it wouldn't be so bad. They can put the bond back on the November ballot but if they don't stop trying to make this school all about sports and not for the simple needs of the kids then they still won't get my vote, and it may cost me later but it will be worth it when it is done right

I believe we should do what is best for our kids futures, but this was not the bond was not it. Now about new text books, new computers, ect. Things that will really benefit our kids and thier futures. How will our kids go through college and life with a new football build or a new gym.

The school bond issue will probably be back on the ballot in November. Parents who failed to vote this time should take a few moments to vote "Yes" for their children's futures. The cost, however, may well have increased by then. As a community we should have done the right thing and passed it now.
