They met for two and half hours behind closed doors, but Navasota school board members made no formal announcement about who would be losing a job at a school board meeting Thursday evening.

"There are approximately nine positions that may be affected, and actually two of those positions are positions that might go away anyway, so it could just be seven when it's all said and done," said Navasota School Board President Hollis Hood.

Hood said the budget doesn't have to be approved until August, so the board still has time to determine if cuts will be necessary.

However, the board did authorize Superintendent Jennings Teel to continue working on the budget and to notify anyone who will lose a job.

Hood says those seven to nine cuts would eliminate around $245,000 from the budget.

Teel previously told KBTX that athletic cuts and consolidation of school bus routes could cut another $160,000 to $200,000 from the budget.

No one at Thursday's meeting could say the total dollar amount the district wants to eliminate.

"We don't really have that number yet, I guess we could probably get the number but we're not to that point yet," said Hood.

District officials say the proposed three percent raise for all staff will cost roughly around $500,000 dollars.

The board will meet again for a budget workshop Monday, July 21, at 6:30pm.

Here we sit....waiting for co-workers to get fired. How very sad for our school and community. While some of us will be getting a raise, others will have their job eliminated. What foresight! Weeks before the school year starts! These are the lowest paying jobs in the District. The amount of money funding these positions is not the issue. If support staff or teachers do not do their in the appropriate manner, then document the problems and terminate with just cause. As far as the new principal, he has no experience running a high school....we hired an assistant principal.

Folks, the only reason these people are taking advantage of you and wasting your tax money is you are allowing them to do it. They work for you. You do not work for them. Get your employees in order. Now that you are well aware they can not manage your money and are blowing it on meals, travel, plasma televisions, cars or whatever it is fire them at the ballot box on election day. Nobody can take advantage of you without your permission. These elected officials are laughing at you behind your back as they blow your hard earned money because they think you are too stupid to catch it. Prove to them otherwise. The joke will be on them when you do not reelect them. show them you are the boss and you will not tolerate any foolishness.

If any of you are discourage with the NISD and you happen to work in BCS, may I suggest putting your child in a private school. Out school sometimes doesn't have enough books, let alone computers, for all the students so they share. All of the kids academically outperform the public schools and the school doesn't tolerate alot of the BS that public schools do. Any serious mischief, bullying, fighting gets you booted out of the school permanently. Financially, it is a hardship especially during tough times like these, but the sacrifice is well worth it when your child performs so well. And when times get tough they don't let go of their custodians, etc.. the parents just chip in to help whereever they can.

i just heard on the street that the girls coaches have a workout room, treadmills, steppers, and with couches where the old training room was, and also a players lounge area with two new leather couches and a plasma flat screen tv also. is this true? must be nice to be a coach

The average amount of pay of the jobs cut ($27,000) should be deducted from Teel's salary in response to his mismanagement of the school district.

NISD used to be an awesome school, but that was a very long time ago. There has been too much wasteful spending during the more recent years with both the School Board members and the Administration not heeding to concerns of the public. Instead, they chose to look at concerns as complaining. Look at where it has finally landed! I have attended functions in some of the NISD facilities and I was horrified at the condition(s) they were in. If we had maintained rather than upgraded, we could have enough money to operate with. Also, bigger cuts do begin at the top and we need alot of money, cut out some of the administration and get back to actually working for a paycheck. And, providing vehicles (to include gas) for part time employees, plus a glorified pay rate...it doesn't take a rocket scientist to catch onto that waste. What is this Math Specialist I am hearing about, too? I would hate to see HER paycheck...

Do any of you have any idea how the stuff that is bought for extracuricular activities is funded? I highly doubt it. I am amazed at the shear stupidity that flows here. Not to mention that the vast majority of the people that say and read it think that it is fact.

That is just plain stupid to merge with CS or Bryan or any other school. I do not agree with what they are doing at the school. But merging them would make worse sense. And for the comment made from "Enough" there are some good kids that go to school in Navasota. You are making it sound like nothing but bad goes here heck look at B/CS.

I don't care for NISD, but I don't think they should merge with anything out of Brazos co.

I agree with anonymous. It is time for TEA to step in. As a NISD taxpayer, I am afraid that monies are being squandered on unnecessary items. A plasma tv and surround sound for the athletic department??? Come on, folks, how many of us taxpayers can afford a plasma tv and surround sound. Also, I would be curious as to how much of the taxpayers dollars is being spent to buy food for the board members and the supt's staff. Can't board members eat before they come to a board meeting? I've heard an old saying that, "if you take care of the pennies, the dollars will take of themselves" Perhaps, we should all look more closely at how our taxpayers dollars are being spent. Bring TEA in, give us honest and straightforward answers, clean out the administration, reward competent staff, and by all means--give these students the education they deserve.

How can you possibly feel good about receing a raise of 3% knowing that some head of household might be without a job when school starts? What is going on?

Posted by: anon on Jul 18, 2008 at 09:26 AM
sounds like nisd needs an audit big time

Posted by: voter Location: navasota on Jul 18, 2008 at 09:25 AM

Posted by: wondering on Jul 18, 2008 at 09:19 AM
does anybody at NISD have any idea what they are doing? Hood and his double-talking is not making sense.

Posted by: Kh Location: Bryan on Jul 18, 2008 at 07:47 AM
Sounds like back peddeling to me me now. Teel is running scared.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 18, 2008 at 01:07 AM
Is there any way we can have TEA audit NISD? This Failed ISD needs closed. We need to merge it with CSISD.
