After seven years without a property tax increase, the city of Bryan is considering raising the rate by a penny.

The current property tax rate stands at $.6364 per $100 of assessed value. The new rate proposed is exactly one penny more, $.6464.

The effective rate, which is the rate needed to raise the same amount of revenue as last year, is $.6121. The proposed increase is well under the rollback rate of $.6712.

Under the new rate, a family with a $100,000 home would see its tax bill go up $10 a year.

The city council will vote Tuesday on placing the proposed increase on its September agenda.

We need code enforcement and police services not downtown money. If most areas of Bryan had some type of crime and ghetto control, So many people would not have moved business out of west Bryan.

More money for Downtown Bryan! More money for Conlee's pocketbook! Citizens if you are against the raise, show up at tomorrow's council meeting and sign up for Hear Citizens. Get involved. Its the only way. We have no other way of taking control.

Anonymous, it doesn,t matter if taxes increase due to propety values going up or a tax rate increase, the amount of money a homeowner has to pay to the extorsionist[goverment] is still to much. I like, everyone else, would like to see the elected officials take care of the city and not themselves. To do that means no more TIFs for the developers, no more tax abatements for out of town businesses, and land giveawys to A & M. In other words a healthy growth occurs naturally [its called the free market system] from supply and demand.

Dear Bull, Your property tax has not gone up to due to an increase in the city imposed tax.

American people are struggling to pay the bills they have, they do not need any more added to that. We have to live within our income, the government should learn to do so as well. Before the government of Bryan decides to add another burden to the backs of the taxpayers, they should cut out wasteful spending. They are out of control. People of Bryan, vote them out. People who are in office too long get greedy with our money.

WOW! I have to agree with LW. The county is growing by leaps and bounds, and there is no infrastructure to support it.

Bryan is getting more like CS every day. They think the tax payers are made of money and can be plucked at random to do the fo - fo things that they want (like millions to Downtown Bryan) We are nearing the same number of pot holes and art work on the streets of Bryan. Come on Mayor/Council get the infrastructure right first !

What the h--l are you talking about Joe Brown? (edited) My property tax has gone up every year for the last 8 or 10 years. The Eagle never checks or questions the talking points handed them by the local government entities.
