One of Hollywood's latest releases is being attacked by protesters across the United States. They say the action comedy "Tropic Thunder," is highly offensive.

The movie starring Ben Stiller and Jack Black repeatedly uses the word "retard," and that has one Robertson County mom taking a stand.

Kristy Colvin, the founder a local down syndrome association, says the movie is offensive to those with mental disabilities and she's urging people not to see it.

"Tropic Thunder" is a movie inside a movie that spoofs Hollywood. Ben Stiller, plays an actor portraying "Simple Jack," while Robert Downy Jr. is in Black face.

Protesters say the film is politically incorrect and are urging people not to see it.

"Every single person on this planet deserves the same dignity," Colvin said.

Kristy Colvin, the founder of the International Mosaic Down Syndrome Association based in Franklin, is boycotting the movie. She's upset about the repeated use of the word "retard" in the film.

"We want people to know that the "R" word is hurtful, words hurt, no matter what, they hurt," Colvin said.

Colvin knows this first hand, her son Tim was born with Mosaic Down Syndrome.

"To me the "R" word is like a nasty word," Tim Colvin said.

Tim is a fan of Ben Stiller, but says this movie crosses the line.

"I think it's just wrong," Colvin said. "Personally I do like Ben Stiller, but I think this is a mistake on his part."

Despite calls for a nationwide boycott of "Tropic Thunder," Dreamworks says they won't be changing the film.

Colvin just hopes people will change their minds about seeing it.

Tropic Thunder opened Wednesday in theaters nationwide. The movie cost $100 million to make.

Press Release from Mosaic Down Syndrome Association:

Franklin TX: International Mosaic Down Syndrome Association stands united with all disability organizations in the United States concerning the boycott of the film "Tropic Thunder" to be released in theaters Wednesday Aug. 13, 2008.

"Tropic Thunder" is a big-budget, R-rated summer comedy made by DreamWorks/Paramount and directed and co-written by Ben Stiller, who also stars. The movie plot centers around a group of pampered actors who are lost in the jungle while making a war movie. Stiller's character, Tugg Speedman, is presented as a fading action hero who earlier failed in his bid for Oscar glory while portraying Simple Jack, a character with an intellectual disability. Speedman's portrayal of Simple Jack is featured as a movie within the movie.

A conversation in the film between actors Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr., use the word "retarded", "retard" and the phrase "go full retard" in the movie over sixteen times.

In response to language and scenes degrading to those with cognitive disabilities a national coalition of disability advocacy groups met last Wednesday, Aug 8 with DreamWorks to discuss their concerns.

Gail Williamson of the Down syndrome Association of Los Angeles was one of the representatives in this meeting. "People with Down syndrome are easy targets everyday while just minding their own business because their face announces their disability. I can imagine my own son being called "Simple Jack" or "Full Retard" by someone "vulgar" as my son Blair who has DS refers to people who use this language." Said Williamson.

The national coalition of disability advocacy groups object to the frequent use of the word "retard" in "Tropic Thunder" and its promotional materials. Early promotion of the film described Simple Jack as a "retard" and an elaborate DreamWorks marketing website that was taken down last week in response to complaints carried the tagline "Once upon a time … There was a retard."

Although DreamWorks agreed to take the scenes of "Simple Jack" from their trailers, the words used in the film will still be present upon the release of this film Wednesday Aug 13.

Kristy Colvin, president of International Mosaic Down Syndrome Association (IMDSA) joins with this nationwide boycott. "Words such as these used in this film allow for others to bully those with developmental disabilities." Said Colvin "DreamWorks must understand that words do hurt and to use these words and portray a character with developmental disabilities in this manner is not only highly offensive, but also sends a message to the community that people with disabilities do not matter."

International Mosaic Down Syndrome Association stands with thousands of others who plan to picket this film on Wednesday in hopes to send a message to the community that words such as these are offensive to the disability communities and will not be tolerated.

the boycotts for this movie, in my opinion, is quite ridiculous. As posted by other commentators if you are offended by the words in question then dont go see it. I saw the movie the other day and absolutley loved it and will be purchesing it when it comes out on dvd. Also this movie does not JUST make fun of mentally handicaped people. It makes fun of just about every type of people you can think of. To lead a simple life you need to keep an open mind.

How our worlds have changed. Years and years ago if a person was born "different" they were sent off to a home to never be seen again. Then the world changed to the point that we have accept every "different" person no matter what. Now we're "offended" is someone makes a movie about these people? Dang folks...grow up! Like so many have said, if you don't like the movie, don't see it. This isn't my type of comedy so I doubt very seriously that I'll see it. To the person that said you don't have TV in your house...AWESOME!! I did grow up with TV but my parents limited my watching to 1-2 hours A DAY!! I grew up having an imagination, playing with others, and learning to live in a world of actual people...not fictional TV characters! I can't recall who recently said that Americans are whiners, but I'm agreeing with them! TV, movies, news media...no one should teach your children how to become adults...that's a parent's job!

Boycotting the movie? You have to be kidding- If you are offended don't go watch it, but this is ridiculous to call a boycott. This woman needs a life.

That is the only reason I picked up the DaVinci Code - the Vatican denounced it, made it a bigger hit than it might have been.

Boycotting for a just cause, but it won't have the desired result. The town I lived in had this local little video rental, did ok. A local church found they have adult films to rent, and picketed out front. People driving by saw it (as it was on a major street in town) and as a result, the rentals business tripled. A boycott may work for some things, but unfortunatley, a movie isn't one of them, it just makes people want to see what all the fuss is about.

its proof that You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time

There is no need to perpetuate offensive entertainment. Yes, its a free country, but should our liberty damage vunerable people? Why don't you go around and squirt lemon juice in their eyes while you're at it. Their pain is real. Commenters below need to "get over themselves" I will definately NOT go see this movie now.

how is it that ignorance is all that is needed to make people laugh? i have never like the word and especially now that i have a child with ds it is very offensive.

Since this movie just came out, the speakout poll results are completely useless. The vast majority of people need a response choice that says "I don't know, I haven't seen the movie"!!!

wow. i'm offended by people who get offended by offensive language. you offended people need to respect my right to be offended by your offense-offendedness....hey, on a more serious note, has anybody read "1984" lately? not very funny when government is given too much power and censorship becomes the watchword of the ruling class.

This makes me want to go out and buy a ticket to this movie. I am sick and tired of people that get offended over everything around them.

Posted by: Jodi Location: CS on Aug 14, 2008 at 03:59 PM
Oh yeah... A person with a mental disability is not 'Retarded' anyway.. They are called 'Mentally Challenged' so what is the problem.. All the people complaining are the ones that are making it out like these people are 'retarded' not the movie! I would let my child go see it, only because he KNOWS he is not 'retarded!'

My son is in Special Education for a learning disability and my nephew is Down Syndrome. I do not see that this movie is offensive. It is all in how you teach your children and loved ones. It isn't offensive to us because we know that this is just a movie and it is not real. Come on people.

Posted by: NF on Aug 14, 2008 at 03:35 PM
Thank you, Mrs. Colvin and the IMDSA group for alerting us to the need to be more sensitive in the way words are used. No one likes to be called a derogatory name. The fuss over the movie isn't so much about seeing the movie or not seeing the movie. It isn't even about being politically correct. Because there is so much focus on the "R" word and other such terms, no matter how satirical they might be in the context of the movie, WORDS such as these hurt. Think back to when YOU were teased about....anything. Why intentionally blast words that are used specifically to mock? You can be assured that those of us who are aware of the meaning of words will not be attending this excuse for comedy entertainment. I admit, the movie probably has some deep moments (I've seen Jack Black and Ben Stiller shine in other movies) but the offense to those of us or have or love someone with a disability is greater than the need for a cheap laugh. Again, thanks Mrs. Colvin for speaking up!

Like I said before I think Down Syndrome Association wants a share of the profits from this movie. They found a little chance and there making a big deal out of it. And if I cant say it ill change it up for you Grow up Wetards.

"1. Hollywood movie 2. State funded school. You do the math." But the same principle applies; remember what happened to Imus when he referred to a girl's basketball team as Santa Claus? Or was that somehow more offensive?

I do not think parents should let their kids watch any of the High School Musical movies. Sharpay (who has blonde hair and blue eyes) is portrayed as self-centered. She tries to steal another girl's boyfriend! Blonde/blue eyed females unite! How dare they stereo type people like that!

As a blonde, I am offended by dumb blonde jokes. As a woman, I'm offended by women-can't-drive jokes. As an Aggie, I'm offended by Aggie jokes. As a polock, I'm offended by polock jokes. See where I'm going with this?

Let's remember the comedian that was fined and got into alot of trouble for using the "N" word....That being said, however, my brother has Down's and we personally don't use the "R" word in a joking matter anymore but that's just us. I don't look down on anyone for saying it, though, because almost all of us have called our friends or enemies that before without meaning to insult those with real difficulties. There are tons of movies out there that are insulting to different people but this is America and people have the freedom to make these movies. We also have the freedom to choose not to watch them as well. A movie is not going to make people cruel to others. We do a fine job of that on our own.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: College Station on Aug 14, 2008 at 09:13 AM
If you have ever watched one of Ben S.'s movies you would find he makes fun of himself in many of them.. what comedian doesnt make fun of something we all are related to..Zoolander, Meet the Fockers, Dodge Ball, Starsky and Hutch, Along came Polly, There's something about Mary.. If this isnt the type of movie you would go to..then don't go.. its a Comedy.. and if we cant make life funny.. then watch politics..

But why isn't anybody screaming about Downey being in blackface? I seem to remember a Fraternity being DISBANDED for having a skit by members in blackface at a party a few years back. 1. Hollywood movie 2. State funded school. You do the math.

Posted by: BCS on Aug 14, 2008 at 08:42 AM
its a movie, i do feel that Hollywood would need to take some kind of responsibility to produce good tasteful movies but also understand, there have been movies made from the beginning of film making that have been offensive to someone people while its not offensive to others. It always have been this way and more likely always will be unless someone rewrites our amendment of free speech and actually forbids any offensive language from movies from any public form of entertainment (ie movies, music, TV).

Posted by: By the way Location: Bryan on Aug 14, 2008 at 08:42 AM
Since this movie only opened yesterday (unless I read wrong) did they actually SEE the movie before they decided it was offensive and called for a boycott?? I'm guessing not.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 14, 2008 at 08:42 AM
"We want people to know that the "R" word is hurtful, words hurt, no matter what, they hurt," Colvin said.** And the words ignorant, idiot, dork, nerd, stupid, bad are also mean.. Lets ban those words too, they're hurtful. Get a grip people, it's a movie. I wasn't going to go see it, but now, I think I will.

Posted by: HM Location: Bryan on Aug 14, 2008 at 08:31 AM
You've seriously got to be kidding... boycott?? Of all the malicious, violent, and seriously detrimental material that's out for public consumption THIS is what you choose to boycott? Since this movie is rated "R" don't you expect to be offended at some point? Frankly, I probably won't see the movie because I'm not a fan of Stiller or Jack Black, but I feel that boycotting is generally done by those who'd like to censor the entertainment industry and since the movie is already rated "R" isn't that enough?

Posted by: DAR Location: Bryan on Aug 14, 2008 at 08:28 AM
I think you RETARDED poeple need to get a real job, and a life. It's called free speech. If you don't like something about the movie, then don't watch it. Not everyone feels the same way about it as you do. Your so caught up in the fact that they say retard in the movie, that your missing the rest of it. If everyone got offended by what someone has to say, then everybody would be protesting eachother.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 14, 2008 at 08:02 AM
Had no plans to see it anyway, just from the previews, the movie looked ... well "R-word". So I think I'll just do as I planned. But why isn't anybody screaming about Downey being in blackface? I seem to remember a Fraternity being DISBANDED for having a skit by members in blackface at a party a few years back.

Posted by: MM on Aug 14, 2008 at 07:40 AM
The "R" word...the "N" word ... the "Q" word ... the "T" word ... the "F" word ... all forbidden and the list is growing. We are starting to run out of letters of the alphabet.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 14, 2008 at 07:32 AM
Doesn't the word "retarded" mean "slow?" So, is the word "slow" offensive too? I understand that maybe its not the word but how it's used -- the world would be a better place if no one was cruel or ignorant, but its not. If it bugs people that people poke fun of others, then maybe use your words to lift others up instead of bringing them down.

If you are looking for clean entertainment try the lifetime network or something. Yes all people deserve respect but also all people are fair game for ridicule. The moment you say you can make fun of this group but not that one, now who is being a hypocrit. You want them all to be treated equal , so full of your own self rightousness you are too afraid to laugh and make light of crappy situations. Toughen up , chill out, and if your so bored you need to protest find a good valid reason.

Posted by: Wally Location: College Station on Aug 14, 2008 at 06:56 AM
If they can get the "R" word banned, I want the "V" word banned as well. Those constant "V" word commercials on the spike channel make me feel bad.

This country is full of a bunch of cry babies, hope the word cry doesn't offend anybody. Come on America nobody used that word and pointed the finger at anybody. That is whats wrong with this country people are always looking for a lawsuit, Even though I never did and never will see the movie because it sick, the movie Broke Back Mountain offended me and the rest of the men that are real cowboys, because they are striaght not gay, so if you don't like the movie Tropic Thunder becuase they use the word retard, don't watch it, its a free country for now, if more people like this women from franklin come along thought it wont be, this country has way worse problems to worry about than what some actor/actress says in a movie, quit your crying, and stop trying to control what other people do.

Posted by: Tom Location: College Station on Aug 14, 2008 at 05:10 AM
Do these people have any understanding of satire? The movie is satirizing and making fun of Hollywood and the actors, directors and producers who inhabit it. The characters using the term "retard" are portrayed as self-absorbed idiots and fools. The moving is making fun of them. Therefore, how can a movie that portrays someone who uses the term "retard" as an idiot and a fool be considered insulting to someone with a disability? The movie is actually insulting the people who use the offensive term. All of these people protesting this movie need to think for a couple of minutes and not just react when they hear a particular word.

ITS A MOVIE PEOPLE. Get over it.

I understand why the "R" word is hurtful and I agree the "N" word should be gone forever. I don't understand why the "F" word gets to be used so much in so many movies. If we can get the "F" word banned, maybe Hollywood will clean up its act all the way around.

If it offends you dont go see it. That is the problem nowdays, you cant please everyone, what may be offensive to you may be funny to me. If I dont like it then I wont spend money on it. It's my right. You dont see people calling for a boycott of movies that have lots of illegal drug use by teens. I am sorry for your son's condition and it is not funny, but they dont directly make fun of mentally challenged people.

Seriously? All this is doing is creating free publicity for the Movie....don't like what they say, then don't watch the movie!

Plse understand, I am not just 1 person doing this boycott. This is a nationwide boycott by over 400 national and local orgs. Ben Stiller WROTE THIS MOVIE. So, yes I can be upset with him. This movie was made to make fun of all minorities. The difference is, they asked ALL minorities about their thoughts on the movie EXCEPT those with delays. For the person who knows Tim.. You are right, it isn't new but does that make it right? I think you must not really know Tim, because if you did, you would know that he has an IQ of 110. NOT RETARDED. It isn't about the movie and it isn't about the word. It is about HOW the word is misused and HOW the movie allows EACH OF YOU WHO DON'T 'GET' IT to think it is OK to use it. I invite you to two websites. www.mosaicmoments.today.com www.patriciaebauer.com These sites will allow you to understand the whole movie and why millions are boycotting it. No, we don't think you wont watch it.We just don't want you to say retarded!

Posted by: Anthony Location: Bryan on Aug 13, 2008 at 09:45 PM
Wow we are not supposed to see a movie because it is offensive to some?? What about the 'N' word or the 'F' word or any other word that some might think is offensive? We might as well just all stop going to the movies or for that matter stop watching any kind of t.v. or projected program! Why is this happening you ask? The answer is ..because we now live in a nation of sissies and so called politically correct idiots, that's why! I hope they don't ban this movie in this area because I plan on watching it and hopefully enjoy myself! I will tell everyone that hasn't seen it that it was either great or not so great but that will be my opinion, just like it is your opinion to boycott it. We are ALL capable of making up our own minds and aren't in need of someone who feels offended to try and make it up for us! To be honest I am offended that this woman was allowed to speak and even consider boycotting Tropic Thunder lol after all it IS just a movie!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 13, 2008 at 08:51 PM
Good Grief... F bombs fly from loud music, movies and every other person and these people are insulted by "retard"? Some people just need to shut up!!!

Posted by: Not the Answer on Aug 13, 2008 at 08:50 PM
There are movies of the "extremely stupid comedy" genre, with content that is insensitive and use insulting or ugly words to describe all kinds of target groups. If you don't like that kind of thing, don't watch it. I don't and as a parent I would not give my young teenagers permission to see it either. If the subject of the movie comes up at home, I will also remind them (remind, because they have already been taught this many times) that they should be kind to others and not make "jokes" at others' expense. Calling for a boycott though is an overreaction and has almost certainly brought more attention to the movie than it would have generated on it's own. Finally, from personal knowledge of Tim, I know that he has been called the R-word and other negative adjectives many times, long before this movie ever existed. I don't approve of that, just saying that it's not something new caused by this movie and boycotting this movie won't stop cruel people from being cruel.

Posted by: Stand For Something Location: Brazos Valley on Aug 13, 2008 at 08:25 PM
I applaud Mrs. Colvin. The biggest problem with people these days is that its "easier" to accept than to STAND FOR SOMETHING! This world would probably be a lot better off without Hollywood's brain washing! I'm standing up for my kids...we don't have tv or video games at our house. And for the naysayers...God gave each of us gifts and talents to use to serve others, it's hard to serve when you are watching tv or playing video games. Encourage your kids to use their gifts and talents in a positive way, regardless of their mental and/or physical capacities. Be their example. They are tomorrows leaders and need our encouragement...not Hollywoods! Mrs. Colvin, thank you for making me aware of this movie. I'll make sure my kids and friends don't contribute to the Hollywood cause!!!

Looks like some people just want attention. And like they dont have it already. Yes its a bad word but common if ya dont like it dont watch it. How bout movies that use the "N" Word for old slavery meanings??? Or how about the "B" for women???? All these words are always used and you cant really take stuff so hard these days. If the Down Syndrome Association is seeking money there not gonna get it this way. Nice try. Lighten up America.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 13, 2008 at 06:23 PM
Why reward these hollywood clowns by putting money in they pocket? Its a B-movie comedy - the world will still turn if nobody goes to see it. Count me in the boycott.

Posted by: Kasey` Location: College Station on Aug 13, 2008 at 06:21 PM
I truly understand that the "R" word is offensive..I personally don't use the "R" word myself..but this being Ben Stillers fault is not right...Ben Stiller is just the actor...It is the writer of the movie that should be accused of all this not Ben.

Posted by: tiredofpolicallycorrect Location: cs on Aug 13, 2008 at 06:20 PM
It's not a dirty word...it's a medical diagnosis. All the media and boycotts will surely cause more negative use of the word. You are just handing out the ammunition.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Bryan on Aug 13, 2008 at 06:13 PM
If the movie offends you, don't go see it. It's not like it's specifically targeting a person or family. Most comedy movies these days are in poor taste, but they seem to be popular with the younger generation and that's what makes money.

Posted by: Paul Location: Bryan on Aug 13, 2008 at 06:12 PM
The people calling for a boycott of TROPIC THUNDER have obviously never heard the old expression that it's hard for somebody to get your goat if they don't know where it's tied up. With the best of intentions, Kristi Colvin and friends are giving this movie the kind of publicity that money can't buy. I haven't seen the previews, and it just doesn't seem like something I'd see anyway. But Ms. Colvin should realize that in the real world there are plenty of people who'll use words like that in a hurtful way. Ben Stiller and company are saying them in a comedy.

Posted by: Gary Location: Bryan on Aug 13, 2008 at 06:04 PM
Come on, if you're gonna boycott that movie, you'd have to boycott 90% of movies & television. Everyone is always so sensitive.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: CS on Aug 13, 2008 at 05:58 PM
Get over yourself. By carrying on this way you perpetuate the problem. Let it go and join the mainstream. Life is too short to get carried away by a minor comedy

You got to be kidding. This is RETARDED! Is there such a thing called free speech anymore? I'm tired of everyone saying this is and that aren't politically correct. Any one else feel the same? If we had people thinking like these idiots back in the 30's - 80's, we wouldn't be speaking english. They would have been like France and said we don't want to hurt your feelings so we won't stop you from killing us.
