The recently released annual survey of Bryan residents is helping city leaders plan for the future.

With 1,500 homes receiving the seven-page survey, more than 400 responded.

Since last year, the survey says the city has improved in almost all areas, but there are always places to improve.

Overall, Bryan residents are most pleased about their public safety services. Nearly 90 percent of respondents to the city's survey who said they had an opinion said they were satisfied with public safety services. More than 80 percent were happy with the libraries, and nearly 80 percent touted parks and recreation in the city.

On the low end: street maintenance. Of the categories given, the quality of the roads earned the city its lowest marks, just 42 percent satisfaction. Looking at a map of the city and how people responded, it's clear where most believe the work needs to be done.

Citizens who filled out the survey from the northside of town are dissatisfied with the roads in their part of town. Otherwise, Bryan residents who responded were neutral or satisfied.

Respondents also say it's not just the streets, but also the sidewalks. Only 37 percent said they were satisfied with the availability of them, and just 44 percent were OK with the condition existing sidewalks are in.

Bryan residents also want more trails to walk. While most were happy with the city's park trails, 43 percent said the city should emphasize creating new ones.

And citizens are also happy to walk through Downtown Bryan. More than three quarters of the respondents said they were satisfied with the maintenance and preservation of downtown.

Among the other notable items: 53 percent of residents who responded said they'd like to see more police visibility in neighborhoods. Also, 54 percent said they'd never contacted the city with a question, problem or complaint over the last year.

There were 10 major categories of city services surveyed, and all but one -- enforcement of city codes and ordinances -- received better or equal marks from survey respondents compared to last year's survey.

The 2007 survey was the city's first DirectionFinder survey, conducted by ETC Institute out of Kansas.

City Hall? Oh you mean that building that the city elders sit in, and quickly mute the crowd when they get two negatives in a row? Face it, the people you complain to are the same people that made your complaint valid. A brick wall would be far more responsive towards your concerns, unless of course your money is what keeps them in the plush chairs. Been to City Hall before, but all I got was a Tshirt that said thanks for wasting the gas.

Survey is done by an outside source. The employees have nothing to do with this survey. All information is public if you feel like going to City Hall instead of posting comments on the internet.

another Bryan stupid is stupid does! Or do we need to take a 2-3 vote on that one? Sure wish everyone would get a survey, wonder if the city would listen or fudge the truth they receive? Interesting, that so high LIKES downtown Bryan? Guess they are all part of the Conlee/Bienski/Horton family.

would like to know who determines the survey. drive down South college and those back streets and check out the area. you wouldn't need a survey.

Yeah, funny how I got one last year, but not this year. Maybe they didn't like my negative responses. Maybe the survey people at City of Bryan need to retake that course on sampling techniques and bias.

Surveys are pretty hit or miss. What they should do is make the survey available online w/and IP tracker, so that people who want to vote can vote, and they can keep it to one vote per IP address.

How come I did not receive a survey. How did the city determine who was to receive a survey. Only 400 out of a possible 1500 returned the survey. What a pathetic response. The ones that did not return the survey either live in a perfect world/town(not Bryan) or are the first to complain but do nothing to voice their opinions.

I think it's funny that streets in north Bryan are in bad shape, ( per survey ) but north and south rosemary has new asphalt overlay, maybe because the mayor lives in this neighborhood ?I agree with RC 400 out of 60,000 people ? ( Do not belive the people were heard )I think the city is trying to make us belive it's looking out for all of us, when there realy looking out for there self or business partners , or friends.

While 400 people out of a possible 60,000 that could have completed a survey, I hardly find the results accurate. Of all the problems we have here, people only complain about not having walking trails? How about Aspluhnd who cuts tree limbs but leave them laying in yards for weeks, what about the run down trailer parks that house hundreds of Bryan's protected illegal immigrant population? Yes, lets get new walking trails, maybe that'll keep us distracted from the real problems that need to be improved on.
