Cities and school districts across the country are forcing their employees to cover up tattoos if they want to keep their jobs.

It's happening in parts of Utah, Florida and Missouri.

But the orders to cover up are growing as tattoos become more popular.

And while some workers are temporarily covering them up, others are taking more drastic measures.

"It's artwork. A good tattoo is a piece of art and I appreciate the effort and the time it takes to put into it."

Nikki Shea of College Station is getting an elaborate tattoo on the lower half of her leg.

"I can remember being pretty little and thinking that they were just really pretty," Shea recalls.

The artist responsible for this design is Cliff Collard of Arsenal Tattoo.

He says his College Station shop is booked for the next two and a half months.

"It just seems like it's increasing in popularity, definitely due to the television shows, I think," Collard said.

Reality shows like Miami Ink and LA Ink. And with more people getting tattoos, more people are making another kind of appointment.

"Just a little local anesthetic," Dr. Malcolm Rude reassures his patient.

19-year-old Coleman Cubage is getting his tattoo removed via laser surgery.

"What it (his tattoo) means is I'm in control of my life, no one influences me," Cubage said.

He was marked with Chinese characters on his forearm one year ago, and regretted it the very next day.

"The main mistake I made was putting it right here on my arm," said Cubage.

"I really want to go to college and do something with my life, and I don't want that there while I have a professional career," explains Cubage.

He is no different than much of America. The American Society of Dermatological Surgery shows half of the people who get tattoos end up regretting them later.

"A lot of professionals come in and say now they don't want it, or moms that had a tattoo when they were younger," said local plastic surgeon Dr. Malcolm Rude.

Dr. Rude says laser tattoo removal has increased 20% a year, for the past four years.

"I think it's going to become a very popular thing to do, to have them removed, probably as popular as it is now to get them," said Rude.

But it's not a cheap or quick fix.

"What you're hoping to see is a little frosting, where the tattoo ink turns a little lighter. That's not actually the tattoo ink disappearing. The ink will actually be broken up by the laser and then your body comes along with the white blood cells and carries the debris of the procedure off," Rude explains.

That's why treatments are done two months apart. So it takes at least a year commitment.

The average session costs $400 and it takes between six and eight sessions to work.

This is Coleman's second time under the laser.

So this college student's $75 tattoo is going to cost him at least $2,400 to remove.

"I actually made a deal with my mom, she said that if she helped me remove the tattoos, I wouldn't be able to get any more tattoos," Cubage said.

And there's no guarantee the laser surgery won't leave a scar

"Can you feel anything?" asks Dr. Rude. "A little bit," Cubage replies.

As for the pain factor?

"It's painful, it's uncomfortable, it's not that bad though," Cubage said.

His recommendation: "I'd say think about it for a really long time and think about what you're going to be doing later in your life."

Back at Arsenal Tattoo where Niki Shea is admiring her new addition. One of many she has on her body.

"I don't really like jewelry, so it's kind of what I do instead of jewelry," explains Shea.

She says she doesn't regret any of tattoos. But she does offer advice to those considering getting marked.

"It is forever," Shea reminds. "It's not something you do on a whim."

Usually people who get a tattoo on impulse, while intoxicated, or to please someone else, are the ones less satisfied with the results.

Cliff Collard, the owner of Arsenal Tattoo emphasizes he does not tattoo anyone under the influence.

I am a part of the tattooed individuals who support this expression of self. My opinion is that it takes a certain type of person who has enough character to be honest with the world as well as themselves. Tattooing is just a way that some people choose to do this. For those of you who to choose to pass judgment on those of us who are "inked," maybe this is something that you need to explore for yourself. Just my 2 cents.

I personally wouldn't have a tattoo but I don't mind other people having them. I DO think that employees should have to at least cover up their tattoos in any establishment that isn't a pub. I understand military getting tattoos but other than that, I kinda consider them trashy as well. I can think of many other things to spend my money on than something that's going to more than likely look horrible when I'm 65 years old.

No, Mark you are not a loser, by the way, Thanks for all you do/did overseas, and I think LOSER POLICE is a loser!. PEOPLE JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE HAS A TATTOO - THAT DOESNT MAKE THEM A LOSER.

Personnally, I wouldnt get a tattoo, but I also believe that other people have the right to get them if they want to. Its called freedom of choice, and that right was given to us by our soldiers, and I know some of them are tattooed also. Having a tattoo doesnt make one a trailer trash, etc, its how someone acts that makes them trashy. People have no right to say that someone is trash just because of tattoos.

I have friends and family with tattoos, so I have to try hard not to demean a person's character when I see one. Prisoners/convicts often have them because they have low self-esteem and too much time on their hands. Today's crowd does it as a fad and their tattoos scream "look at me, I'm a part of the herd". I'll be rebellious and proudly never get a tattoo. But that's just me, you want them all over your body, get after it. I'll try not to stare.

To Joel, I feel sorry for you, you closed minded stuck up, money hungry pig porking around the golf course. You have no right to set in judgement of others. This is fixing to be the year 2009 come out and look around. Oh by the way, I did some of the first loans for home out there, just to let you know.

Posted by: MaryLou Location: B-CS on Nov 26, 2008 at 09:38 PM
Joel does happen to live in a very nice home....I should know...he is my neighbor...and yes my dear it is YOU who needs the "education"....you most likely live in a Bryan trailer-park and have nothing better to do than write idiotic comments on the KBTX blog and pick your feet all day! GET a LIFE !! tatoo-scum bag !!

Posted by: From Joel on Nov 26, 2008 at 09:32 PM
Actually I do live in Miramont and yes it is my home and YES...you need to learn to "proof-read" and stop hating others just because they don't agree that your so called "body-art" is NOT trash! And it is "spelling by the 5th grade"....leave "at least" out of your sentence"! and it is "...mother and father's" NOT "mommy and dad's". I live ALONE btw...and you're still "welcome" to come see what the "GOOD LIFE" is all about Kiddo !!

I would just like to say that everyone has a right to their opinion BUT I would also like to tell the folks below that just because someone has tattoos does not mean that they are low class,or trashy- the way a person acts is what determines those things. I am lucky to have an awesome job at an engineering company that does not care that ALL of my tattoos are visable, they see me for what I am- a hardworking and competent employee. I make a very nice living, I own my home, I provide for my children and give to my community-if this is trashy then so be it. It looks like a lot of people need to re-learn the old lesson of not judging a book by it's cover.

Posted by: Mary Location: BCS on Nov 26, 2008 at 05:32 PM
Just because some tattoo artists tells you its art doesn't mean you should buy into it. He is making money off of you and 50% of you will pay some high dollar dermatologists to get it removed. Make better use of your money and don't make these greedy folks any richer! Stupid is what stupid does.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Leon County on Nov 26, 2008 at 03:00 PM
It is very shameful when your principal is walking around with a tatto and your small children see it. I hope that all schools require that all personnel be "tatto free". After all, they are suppose to be setting an example for our children.

Posted by: To Joel Location: BCS on Nov 26, 2008 at 01:46 PM
Joel, I seriously doubt that you have a home in Miramont because you obviously don't seem to have much of an education. I think we all accomplished spelling by atleast the 5th grade. Please, you really don't have to make these things up. And if you DO have a house in Miramont (which it doesn't matter)it's probably mommy and dad's! All of you people are so worried about how much money you have. Don't you know that the devil is GREEN!?

I personally think that tattoos are a work of art, it takes a lot of talent to make a picture look good on someones skin. I myself have 7 tattoos, 3 of which are visable but I am also very proud of what those 3 tattoos stand for. I have a tattoo on the inside of each of my wrists one of them is a symbol for love & life, the other is an ambigram that says hope & faith, the 3rd visible tattoo is on the bottom of my neck and horse made out of flames that symbolizes not only my love for horses and firefighting but also my free spirit. Not only do I have a full time job, but I also am on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week as a firefighter and a mother of a 7 year old, but I guess just because I have a few tattoos none of that counts and I am still trash. If having tattoos makes me trash well then I guess I must be but just remember all of you that are judging, YOUR NOT PERFECT, no one is!!!

Posted by: To Brian Location: Bryan/ on Nov 26, 2008 at 10:01 AM
From Joel! hey brian....come sit out by my pool in Miramont and then you can decide "WHO" has the money and WHO doesnt ! I am sure whoever "Cliff" is...most likey a very good artist! I still believe TATOOs are trash and 9 times out of 10...folks who choose to get them are usually somewhat KOOKY !!

Posted by: J on Nov 26, 2008 at 09:27 AM
I'm not a big fan of the artwork either but I don't look down on people who have them. I have to remember that my ears are pierced. (only one hole in each ear) But I wasn't born with those piercings so I could be just as much in the wrong for what I did to MY body. Not an argument--Just a thought.

To Loser Police and VA. I have a tatto of the patoon I served in while defending our county as a United States Marine. This was two tours in the "Suck" and three recently completed in Afghanistan. And thee other men who served with me also have the same tatto. Are we looser too?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Bryan on Nov 26, 2008 at 07:55 AM
To V.A.- Please refer to my comment below at 3:16pm. Do you think that you are BETTER because you choose not to get tattoos? Because I'm pretty sure that God created us all equally. You know, I know ALOT of people that have tattoos...and not even ONE of them is on welfare or has the Lone Star card. Listen, I have a great idea...all of you people that are sitting here judging everyone why don't you all post your picture up on a website and let us all come and judge you and tell you everything that we don't like about you and what makes YOU look like trash! But, of course you couldn't do that. You can give it but can't take it. & to Brian- I agree! Cliff probably makes more money than these people ever thought about. And ya know what?...He doesn't have to wear a collar and tie! If this whole world was as close-minded as most of you people and everyone was the same don't you think it would be very boring? I bet if someone told yall Obama had tattoos it would be okay! haha!

Posted by: V.A. Location: Bryan on Nov 25, 2008 at 09:33 PM
Tatoos are TRASH not art! Why is it that members of "lower society" always have money to buy these "pieces of art" but have to rely upon us "working folk" to get their LONE star cards? GO FIGURE ! Most people who have tatoos look like they haven't even bathed in weeks ! Trash pure trash. Just go around Bryan and you can see this.

Posted by: Brian Location: college station on Nov 25, 2008 at 09:20 PM
Hey Joel, if you truly think tatoos are not a work of art, I invite you to go to Arsenal Tatto and spend a couple of hours watching cliff do freehand. I invite you to come look at my paycheck and see if it really is lower paying jobs, LOOSER

Posted by: anonymous Location: cs on Nov 25, 2008 at 05:36 PM
Why is it that people on HUD assistance and welfare don't have enough money to pay rent and buy groceries, but they seem to have money to get a tatoo and get their tatoo "touched up" every now and then?

Posted by: a proud tattoo wearer! Location: College Station Texas on Nov 25, 2008 at 05:16 PM
I dont think people without tattoos should judge people that have them... I have two and plan on getting more. Dont judge me for putting art work on my body, I dont judge your imperfect skin. Tattooing is a choice. Personally I dont like piercings but im not going to judge anyone for there personal preferences... If the color of your skin doesnt matter to get a job neither should be whats on it, unless it isnt tasteful for the work place. There are certain places for different tattoos some need to be hiden. I wear my cross on my ankle proudly!

I will wear what I want when I want.Good thing there is only one I need approval from.So quit looking at other people and belittling trying to make yourself feel bigger LITTLE GUY!And no I don't have any tattoos

Posted by: Rebecca Location: Bryan on Nov 25, 2008 at 03:26 PM
Wow, so the tiny breast cancer ribbon I have in memory of my grandmother, and the small guitar and butterfly in memory of my brother are apparently trashy in the eyes of the public. Mmmhmm, sure... For what it's worth, I'm proud of the two angels these are dedicated to, and am proud to wear this mark. I didn't do it for the public; I did it for myself.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: BCS on Nov 25, 2008 at 03:16 PM
WOW...looks like all of you people need to step down and give God his job back. You all seem to think that you are perfect and think that you are ABLE to judge others for some reason. Don't you know that is nobody's job BUT the perfect one? As long as they aren't on your body why do you care? Sheesh people...I'm 20 years old and probably more mature than all of you put together! I have 2 tattoos and the day I die will be my judgement day so don't try to get ahead of God himself by judging me! Oh, and I one of my tattoos is religious. And I don't give a darn if it offends you or not. Should churches have to take their signs and crosses down because they OFFEND you? I don't think that KBTX should have posted your comment because YOU are offending ME! I will pray for you that you ask God into your life. You really don't know what you are missing!

I got my tattoo when I was 16. My only regret is that I got it when I was young and the location of it. It is hidden on my back. I only wish I had got it 2 inches lower. I think tattoos are beautiful pieces of art, and I can't wait until my daughter's face is more developed and I will get her picture on my chest.

Posted by: M Location: Bryan on Nov 25, 2008 at 01:30 PM
I got my first tat when I was 26 yrs old, and I love each one that I have. I alo plan to gt at least two more. I have placed each of my tattoos wher e they are not visible while I'm at work. I have one that is the cancer ribbon, in remembrance of my grandfather and uncle who passed from their fight with cancer and for various friends and their fight. And most people who do see it, young and old alike are moved by it. I never really noticed tattoos, until I got one, and now when I see someone with tattoos, especially with alot of them, I ask to look at them. And have met some really nice people, and surprisingly enough every person that I have come across that is tattooed, they hold jobs, some very good jobs and pay taxes. So go sit in that chair and get your botox injection or see that plastic surgeon one more time for whatever reason. I'll stick to my tattoos. I love my ink, thanks Mike, Rocket, and Ann

i am an officer and i happen to have two tattoos. i did them for me and only me. i don't regret getting them but on the other hand you can't see them with my uniform on. ultimately it's your decision and no one else's.

Posted by: M Location: Bryan on Nov 25, 2008 at 10:52 AM
I also agree that tattoos are not for everyone, most sheeple can't handle them. But to suggest that those of us of the tattooed persuasion, are less intelligent or less of a human being in any way, is discrimination. The main difference between tattooed people and non-tattooed people, is tattooed people don't mind if you're non-tattooed. And Joel, you'd be suprised how many "affluent individuals" have HIDDEN artwork!!

Posted by: anonymous Location: bryan on Nov 25, 2008 at 10:45 AM
If losers get tattoos, most of our veterans have them, are you calling our veterans losers? These are the people who fought for our rights, our freedom, our future and our childrens future...are they really losers?

Posted by: Grump Location: CS on Nov 25, 2008 at 10:24 AM
Tattoos are stupid and distasteful. Young people get them and then later wish they hadn't. A real lack of foresight.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 25, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Wow...I'm glad to see that all of these people can sit on their ivory towers of judgment. They must be so much better than the rest of us!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 25, 2008 at 09:24 AM
people get tattoos for the same reason you simple minded people hide on the computer and be disrespectful... BECAUSE THEY WANT TO. They don't go around calling you chicken **** for not having any tats, grow up. Oh, and yes, I've got tats, visible ones too, yet some reason my income is in the top tier in this area. What a shame the man doesn't keep me down in order to prove your false point.

Posted by: Abe Location: College Station on Nov 25, 2008 at 09:00 AM
I Dont have anything against Tatoos i have one on my Bicep and one on my chest but i do think they need to be "tasteful". Meaning, dont have your entire body covered in Tatoos if you plan on having a professional career. you can only see mine when im in the gym with a muscle shirt. i think Too many tatoos give the wrong image. I dont regret mine, its a dragon on my bicep, and a tatoo of my childs feet on my chest.

Posted by: M Location: Bryan on Nov 25, 2008 at 08:59 AM
Some of you would be really surprised to find out who has a tattoo, and losers get tattoos? Well lets see, Jesse James has quite a few, and oh yeah he makes more on one bike than most of you make in a year. Most of you couldn't afford one of his bikes if you wanted one. Yes they should be covered up at your job, but just because you hire someone does not give you the right to control a persons body. Don't be so quick to judge, it doesn't become you or society.

Posted by: Cop1 on Nov 25, 2008 at 08:41 AM
I wonder, why do you dislike a person because they have a tattoo? Why do you also notice these tattoos if they are so terrible? I bet you would get a tattoo if no one could see it but your self. Tattoo is similar to makeup, hair color, ear piercing, jewelry and a whole bunch of other stuff we do to modify our appearance, in order to make ourselves more attractive or to raise your self confidence. Tattoos are art, they also give confidence and a feeling of well being. Don't judge a book by it's cover. If you don't like tattoos why are you so interested, and know so much about them? I believe you are the looser, loosing out on what it is like to have enough courage to permanently tattoo your self. I bet you will need to get rid of a bunch of friends and family now!

Posted by: Loser Police on Nov 25, 2008 at 06:16 AM
Losers get tattoos.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: BCS on Nov 25, 2008 at 12:42 AM
I agree that before you get a tattoo it should be well thought out. But, once you think it out definatly get Cliff Collard to do it! He's a wonderful artist, very nice, clean and his shop is clean as well.

Posted by: Howard Location: CS on Nov 24, 2008 at 10:45 PM
they ought to make tatoo removel MANDATORY for anyone who wears those stupid things. they are nasty and distasteful.

Posted by: Joel Location: Bryan on Nov 24, 2008 at 10:16 PM
A tatoo is NOT art ! It looks cheap and makes ugly people look worse than they already do! It is a wonder why people who have them tend to have "lower" paying jobs and positions within society and often times are "looked down upon" by the more affluent individuals.

Posted by: dee Location: college station on Nov 24, 2008 at 09:48 PM
I agree with businesses not hiring some people w/tattoos all over their bodies. I think they are very stupid looking. Why do people get their own name tattooed on their body? I guess so they can remember who they are. Some even get religious symbols put non them which are offensive to some people. Put them where everyone doesn't have to see them!!!!!!!
