It's a problem that was brought to light a few months ago, some local school playgrounds are not fenced in.
You may remember a four-year-old was able to wander away from a College Station elementary school in November, and the incident is now raising awareness about a lapse in school security.
School officials say they've made an on-going effort the last several years to get all elementary school playgrounds enclosed with fences. But unfortunately, both Rock Prairie Elementary and Pebble Creek Elementary have yet to be added to that list, and recent incidents have reminded several College Station parents of the safety issue at hand.
It's a busy road just a few feet away from where children play, that's beginning to cause quite some concern.
"We do realize we need a little better security on these campuses, different than what was appropriate at the time they were opened," College Station ISD Deputy Superintendent Mike Ball said.
It was just about a month ago that four-year-old Cody Funderburk was playing outside Rock Prairie Elementary when he was able to wander away from his group and straight into traffic at the intersection.
"He could have been hit by a car, he could. Somebody could have just stopped and grabbed him and I would have never seen him again, and that's terrifying," Mother Angela Funderburk said.
Equally terrifying for Angela Funderburk is that she believes it could easily happen again.
The school currently shares a playground area with a city park, neither of which has put up an enclosed perimeter fence.
So Angela and several other moms, including Shay Purcell, took their concerns to the College Station City Council.
"Every parent I've talked to would like there to be safe fences around there--for the kids getting out, and also we don't want people coming in when they're on the playground that shouldn't be there," Purcell said.
Within hours, Purcell says College Station Mayor Ben White emailed her back letting her know their interests were one and the same, keeping kids safe.
"I don't want this issue to be an accident waiting to happen, I have requested Glenn Brown to begin the process that would result in this potential problem being resolved in short order," Purcell said reading an email from the mayor.
Officials with the College Station Independent School District say they are working to get their remaining elementary school playgrounds fenced in, so instances such as Cody Funderburk's never happen again.
"It just confirms that we were on the right track in realizing that we need to get it completely enclosed, our playgrounds," Ball said.
Officials with the College Station Independent School District say the fences are not a for sure deal yet. They say they are still waiting on a cost estimate, and then both they and the city will need to sit down to discuss the specifics, such as a time-line, and who's paying for what.

What's the problem? Put up the fence! Who care's how much it cost, just do IT!!
Here's one for you. I was jogging this morning around 9 by the school where they have put up the small fence behind the school. These two older folks were walking their dog behind the school, went up to the fence, opened it and proceeded to walk their dog in and continued walking as if the gate was never there. What's with that? They are old enough to understand that a fence usually means to stop but not smart enough to care. If these older folks are that defiant of rules, what chance do younger ones have. At least we can understand why the younger ones don't respect authority when we see these two idiots flaunt authority and do d**n well what they please. There are rules in place that says one must go through the school office to be on school property and go through a background check. I guess these two (or their dog) must have something to hide. If anyone is watching out there, here's two you may want to keep an eye on. Older doesn't always mean they are ok to be around the kids!
Wondering why the parents and the kids should have to wait for protection! Also wondering if it was one of the CSISD or the city's kid would it take so long, would it have to go threw all these steps of the city and CSISD? I don't think so! And what ever happened to this child? did this mother send her child back to this school? how can she trust them again after what happened to her son, I was in shock when I saw this on KBTX!!
