Department of Public Safety divers are expected to arrive at search area Monday morning on the Brazos River in Washington County. That's where searchers have been looking for two people after authorities say a truck drove off a cliff and into the water Sunday morning.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office said four people were riding the truck as it went over a 25-foot bank.

Sheriff J.W. Jankowski said none of the men worked at the ranch, but took a truck from someone who did.

The steep banks of the Brazos River made search and rescue difficult on Sunday.

"The Brazos River doesn't have boat ramps per say in this area where you can just back up and unload a boat real easy," said Brenham Fire Chief Ricky Boeker.

Brenham Firefighters, Bryan Firefighters, a Department of Public Safety helicopter and Texas Game Wardens joined the Washington County Sheriff's Office and other agencies in the land and water search.

Deputies say around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, four men took a truck from a private ranch off FM1370, and with two men in the back and two in the front, drove off the bank and into the Brazos River.

"It's just a pasture, and the next thing you know you're at the river," said Boeker.

The men in the bed of the truck, 29-year-old Luis Loredo and 22-year-old Juan Carlos Esneider, both of Navasota, survived the drop and the strong current. It was 7 a.m. by the time they could climb out and call for help.

They were later taken to the Washington County jail and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Other charges are possible.

Around noon Sunday, both the DPS helicopter and water rescue crew from the Bryan Fire Department were sent home.

"We haven't found anything along the bank that would lead us to believe that they had gotten out anywhere," said Boeker.

"They were dodging tree stumps, logs, everything coming downstream, and we were going upstream," said Bryan Fire Department Lt. Wesley Gideon.

With little to no visibility, game wardens weren't sure where the truck was, and with no signs of the missing men Sunday evening, the water rescue shifted into a recovery.

"Without having somebody located right now, the odds go down pretty significantly," said Ron Vanderroest, a captain with the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Sunday evening, a bulldozer was brought in to clear some of the brush from the bank where the accident happened. Deputies hoped it would give boats and a DPS dive team easier access as the recovery picks back up.
