Since March College Station Utilities has had voluntary water restrictions in place. Essentially customers are asked to water before 10AM or after 6PM. The problem is ,many either aren't aware of it or don't care. Regardless there is plenty of watering going on throughout the day.
Viewers constantly tell News 3 about illegal watering. One even sent in video. What we saw was sprinklers going off at 5 in the afternoon, full blast at A&M Consolidated Middle School. You can even see puddles on the ground.
The viewer who shot this video, thinks the school district is wasting water, but are they?
We went out and saw the same thing. But school officials say there's a good reason for this.
Clark Ealy, CSISD's Deputy Superintendent for Administrative Services says each school is on a water schedule, but in a statement he released, he acknowledges....
"There are some exceptions to this schedule.
The most notable one is the practice football field at A&M Consolidated Middle School.
This field's been recently regraded and an application of hydro mulch has been applied.
Ealy explains that for the grass in the hydro mulch to take, the field must be watered three times a day...and says they've been doing that early morning, mid-day and in the evening."
But what about other businesses?
Closer to the noon hour, we saw a business on Highway six...its sprinklers we're turned on.
About an hour and a half after that, we saw a worker with College Station's Parks and Recreation department, watering the flowerbeds at the city cemetery. Other members of the crew were working on the sprinkler system just to make sure it works properly.
So, what does the city have to say, especially after we showed our video to them. Jennifer Nations with College Station Utilities says
"My thought is that I'm very glad I was able to call the school district and they explained to me they were hydro mulching. The other thing that I learned by calling the school district is that , that's the only part that they're really focusing on, their school grounds and the parts that aren't being actively used by people they're not watering those."
Nation's says while the city would like everyone to comply, the water restrictions are voluntary and no one will be fined.
Here are the voluntary restrictions the city of College Station:
*Watering should be limited to before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. *Watering days are broken down into three classifications *Commercial/multi-family properties, residential-even numbered addresses, and residential-odd numbered addresses. The schedule is based on the last digit in a customer's address.
* Residential customers with odd numbered addresses should water on Thursdays and Sundays.
*Even numbered addresses on Tuesday and Saturday and commercial and multi-family customers can water on Monday and Fridays.

Our yard in Bryan ...is doing great! We are watering whenever we like!
For those of you who enjoy watering in the middle of the day, how about you just give me that 75 cents for every dollar you're just evaporating into the air?
It is definitely more important that yall have green lawns than the rest of us having food and drinking water.
