A high school sophomore in Bryan is on his way to Harvard...at least for a week this summer.

Rudder High School student Eric Washington has earned the right to be a part of the People to People Academic Program at the Ivy League school. The event runs from July 12-18.

The 15-year-old also attends Hammond Oliver High School for Human Sciences, where a teacher nominated him for the honor based on his academic success and leadership qualities.

According to the program's organizers, People to People summits bring students from around the world together. While at Harvard, Washington and the others will work on an action plan in order to do something significant in the community, as well as building their resume, all while earning academic or service-learning credit.

Admissions officers will also help invitees through the college selection process. Workshops and presentations will also help those involved find their areas of interest for college.

Washington has been active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Farmers of America, Health Occupation Students of America and Drama Club. He also plays football and tennis, and does track and field.

You really are an amazing and talented young man. Having known you when your mother served in the military, I knew you would grow up to do great things. Always kind hearted, thoughtful and respectful, you are a wonderful role model for our young people today. Actually for all people. Congratulations and best wishes.

This are the types of students and stories this community needs to hear more aof. Not the ones that seem to glorify disrespect and disregard for the well being of the BCS communities. More students should take notice of his accomplishments and emulate what he is doing. Looks this young man has his head on straight and will be an asset to RHS, his family and the community.
