The 136 pairs of shoes that adorn trees outside the Walker County Courthouse represent the number of women who died in Texas from domestic violence in 2008. The "In Their Shoes" display will last through the end of October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. The hope behind the display is to prevent more people from becoming victims of this particular crime.
Recent statistics show none of the 136 deaths in Texas from domestic violence happened in Brazos County. According to the College Station Police Department domestic violence services, one-year-old Bezni Que King was one of 11 children in Texas killed as a result of domestic violence in 2008. The Brazos County Coalition Against Domestic Violence is hosting its 15th Annual Candlelight Vigil in recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The vigil is schedule for Tuesday, October 27 for 7 p.m. at the Brazos Cotton Exchange. The event will help raise awareness about domestic violence and celebrate survivors of abuse.

Too bad this display is one-sided. Men die and are injured by domestic violence, too, but THEY are the true silent victims.
Wow...what a powerful visual. It hurts to know that the statistics are that high....136 women & 11 children in TEXAS alone. There is always hope for these women...sometimes they just need friendly reassurance that leaving is best! My mom suffered physical abuse for many years...and has never forgiven herself for putting her kids through it (although I've forgiven her yrs ago) she is still punishing herself for it...the kids have no choice...Mom has to be the strong one & say enough is enough!!!!
Thanks, KBTX, for recognizing October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month!! This year’s BCCADV vigil will promote awareness about the link between domestic violence, child abuse and animal abuse. The keynote is being presented by Ashley Wesp, executive director of the Brazos Animal Shelter. Join us to learn more about this issue and what you, as a community member, can do to intervene/report when you suspect a child, animal or adult is being abused or neglected.
