Among a sea of bicycles at the Hempstead I.S.D. stadium Saturday were hundreds of smiling faces. A crowd of fourth through eighth grade Waller I.S.D. students anxiously awaited to be escorted by Elves and More volunteers to pick out a new bicycle.

"I feel pretty happy and glad because sometimes people are very mean," said Jones Elementary student, Joshavia Williams.

In 2006, the Spring based charity Elves and More distributed 1600 new bicycles to Hempstead I.S.D. students. This year, the charity extended the bike giveaway to Waller I.S.D. All students who received bicycles were required to fill out forms at their school's campus. Saturday, fourth and fifth grade students had to bring a form mailed to their home to the stadium to receive their bikes. Middle school students were required to show their identification before choosing a bicycle.

"It's a beautiful thing I think that everyone has come out to contribute to children in the community and give them a smile for Christmas considering the economy and everything," said parent, Icallette Scott.

The charity's founder David Moore, said nine years ago eleven bicycles were distributed to deserving children. Moore said in 2004 the charity shifted it's focus to the bike giveaway. Moore said the giveaway started out as a feel good event but has grown to have a much deeper meaning.

"They're able to participate in after school programs. Here in Hempstead they'll double the athletic programs and that gets kids in the hands of mentors," said Moore.

Saturday about 900 Waller I.S.D. students received bicycles. More said even though he'll never get a chance to personally meet all the children who have received bicycles from his charity over the years, he hoped to at least meet the children who need the bikes most.

"It's a kid who's had a lot of hard knocks. Nothing good has ever happened and then one day something good did happen, that's my kid. And I hope twenty years from now to meet him," said Moore.

Hempstead City and Waller County officials were among dozens of other volunteers from the Greater Houston who helped unload bicycles from moving trucks. Elves and More typically distributes to children throughout Houston and surrounding counties. Moore said on Saturday he expected to hand out the charity's one hundred thousandth bicycle since the giveaway first began.
