Millions of Americans suffer from migraines and the majority of those are women, in fact women outnumber men 3 to 1 when it comes to suffering from migraines and men who suffer from the ailment the condition is much different.
Ladies usually have symptoms of nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound, but in men the symptoms are quite different.
For men, the signs include sinus congestion, one eye may be tearful, or an eyelid may be droopy, there could be sharp jabs of pain know as ice-pick pains.
Kimberly Oas, with St. Joseph Health System/Texas Brain & Spine Institute says, "Migraine is the a disease of the brain. There has been an incredible surge in our knowledge base, evidence base and in defining what migraine is and is not. It's been around, throughout history there are well documented examples of individuals who had throbbing pain in the head and the eye.">
Now, when it comes to medical attention, men aren't diagnosed as often as women because most don't go see a doctor.
For the most part, men tend to shy away from being diagnosed with migraines because with the diagnoses comes a certain stigma, suggesting that men can't handle stress and are weak.
But if men do seek treatment, just like for women suffering from these headaches, there are drugs that can be prescribed to help with the pain.
