Texas leads the nation in drunk driving fatalities and on Thursday Bryan High School students learned first-hand the consequences of drinking and driving.

Instead of a pep rally or band, the Bryan High School gymnasium had a casket in it Thursday morning.

This week students participated in the Shattered Dreams drunk driving simulation.

Thursday morning students held a memorial service for the student who had died in the simulated crash Wednesday.

It's all part of an effort to encourage students to not drink and drive.

"Like seeing your loved ones and your family like, really thinking that you know you're going to jail or you're dying, so it's more overwhelming than anything and I mean, it's like, it's really powerful too you know," said J.R. Wallace, a Bryan High School junior.

"Her screaming and like really crying made everybody realize that hey you know this could happen, she's dead, and like some of my friends awhile ago here saying that they were crying you know, to hear the fact that I was dead and that Kylie died later, like you know tearing up. They thought it was real," said Tiffany Garcia, another Bryan High School student.

The presentation also featured speeches by two local residents who'd had their son and wife killed by drunk drivers.

I'm glad that I was able to take part in Shattered Dreams this year. It was really moving for me and I hope that it moved the rest of the students as well.

Thank you for all the positive comments. Shattered Dreams is a lot of hard work, but it is worth every minute. I know many of the students were impacted and that's why it was done. This is for students as well as the community, and it's amazing to see that an impact was made. We encourage all schools to try it!
