For many, birthday parties are all about getting gifts.
But for three local teenagers, their celebration was about giving to others, while honoring their friend.
Madison Kothmann, Morgan Livingston, and Jacqueline Handy celebrated their birthdays together earlier this month at Adamson Lagoon in College Station.
But instead of receiving gifts, they asked their guests to donate to the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation in honor of Erin Buenger.
Erin died in April 2009 after an 84 month battle with the childhood cancer.
During her short 11 years of life, Erin became a champion and lobbyist for children's cancer research.
The birthday party raised 700 dollars to help find a cure for the deadly disease.

WOW! What an awesome party idea! You three girls should be very proud of yourself!
Madison is my little sister and i'm so proud to say that. I love what you three did for your friend if only we had more people in the world like you i think we would all be happier and live in a much better world and thank you to everyone who donated to this great cause.
When my kids hit about 5 or 6 we ask for spare change or donations from their friends when they come for the birthday party instead of presents. The birthday girl/boy picks the ministry opportunity of their choice and then I match whatever is donated. One year my middle son's friends conspired together and raised over $150 for the Haiti orphanage that our church was sending shoes to...I happily matched it but I put on a big show about how they broke the bank. It encouraged the rest of the kids too. This year he had enough to buy 23 pair of shoes for Buckner Shoes for the Soul. It has become a birthday tradition in our family and they still get presents from parents/grandparents but none from their friends. It is GREAT!
