A typical Friday afternoon on a school playground turned into something frantic last week when a first grader suddenly collapsed.
It is something that administrators of the Madisonville Consolidated Independent School say has never happened.
“Friday afternoon I got a phone call from Dr. Brooks who was out of breath saying a first grader collapsed during recess and was unresponsive,” said MCISD Superintended Keith Smith.
Seven-year-old Carlos Ramos collapsed as he was running across the playground. First aid, including CPR, was administered by the school nurse until local emergency responders arrived. Ramos was then rushed to a local hospital, then air lifted to Scott and White in Temple where he later died.
"It's absolutely tragic and heartbreaking, especially within a community of our size," explained Smith.
With Carlos there was no sign of anything, his mother did report that he had not been sick at home,” explained Madisonville Elementary Principal, Rhodena Brooks.
Carlos Ramos' parents were aware of a known heart condition; however, the district says they were unaware of any health ailments on his school medical records.
“It is very important for parents to report any illness that their child has or condition because as a teacher we can look out for things,” said Brooks.
In a written statement sent home with students Monday, the district says, "On Friday, a team of MCISD school counselors were sent the Elementary to provide additional support for our children. Hereafter, our own school counselor will be accessible to them at all times. We love our children and will do all that is necessary to help them cope."
“Our school district is very sad this has happened, Carlos was a wonderful little boy. We enjoyed having him, he was energetic and he loved coming to school,” said Brooks.
It is something the district says they could never anticipate, and for a school of nearly 700, they will continue coping with the loss of one of their own. News 3 was unable to reach Ramos' parents. Funeral arrangements are pending.
