Three Injured, Dog Dead in Major Crash at 79 & Hwy 6

DPS Officials say some lanes of traffic are starting to re-open after a major accident that shut down Highway 79 & Highway 6 for hours.

Emergency first responders tell News 3 that the accident involved an 18-wheeler and an RV.

A trooper on scene says the RV was making a U-turn from the 79 eastbound lanes when it drove into the path of an oncoming 18-wheeler. The truck did not have time to stop and struck the RV.

TxDOT says one northbound lane on 79 has re-opened, and the southbound lanes are detouring onto Old Franklin Highway.

According to Robertson County Sheriff Gerald Yezak, three people have been transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan. One of the accident victims was airlifted by helicopter, the other two were taken by ambulance.

The sheriff says an elderly couple was involved in the wreck, and that a dog died in the accident.

TxDOT officials say drivers should expect significant delays or find an alternate route. They say they hope to have the roadway open by 6pm.

DPS and emergency personnel are on the scene. We have a crew en route to the accident site and will bring you updates as we learn them. Stay with News 3 for the latest on this breaking news story.
