Children's Summer Reading Program: Ghost Species
Jul 17, 2012 10 AM and 2 PM
Larry J. Ringer Library, 1818 Harvey Mitchell Pkwy. S., College Station, TX 77845
TAMU Biology Professor Dr. Leslie Winemiller will talk about how scientists determine whether a species is extinct or not, and what influences, both natural and man-made, contribute to extinction. Some of the examples she will use include fashion clothing using rare animals (such as hats with bird feathers), the coelacanth (rediscovered prehistoric fish), the ivory-billed woodpecker, using transmitters to track whooping cranes, and how the changing balance of nature affects native species such as p. cornutum (the Texas horned lizard). Presentations are at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Pick up a free ticket from the children's desk. Tickets are available starting 30 minutes before each presentation. Seating is limited.
