Second-Grader Brings Handgun to Class

Posted: 6:04 PM May 9, 2012
Reporter: Associated Press

RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (AP) - A suburban North Texas couple are under investigation after an 8-year-old second-grader brought a loaded handgun to school.

A police statement says the boy tried to put the gun on his classroom desk when it fell to the floor at Richland Elementary School in the Fort Worth suburb of Richland Hills. His classmates told the teacher, who teacher confiscated the gun and took the child to the office to await police.

Police Sgt. Nathan Stringer says it's a miracle the gun didn't discharge, and that the boy told officers he had no reason to bring the gun to school.

The boy wasn't charged because of his age, but Stringer says his mother and her boyfriend may be charged with allowing the child access to a firearm. No names were released.
