Snowstorm Hits NYC, Boston; 1 to 3 Feet Feared, 350,000 Outages

Posted: 8:37 PM Feb 8, 2013
Reporter: Associated Press

BOSTON - - A winter storm forecasters warn could be a blizzard for the history books with a potential for up to 3 feet of snow is clobbering the New York-to-Boston corridor.

More than 14 inches of snow has fallen in Belmont, Mass., just northwest of Boston. More than 13 inches cover parts of northeastern Connecticut.

Throughout the Northeast, about 350,000 homes and businesses had lost electricity by Friday night as wet snow, freezing rain and howling winds caused havoc. Most of the outages are in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Thousands of flights have been grounded. New York City's airports are closed. There's 11 inches of snow east of the city.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino says: "This is a storm of major proportions."

And the National Weather Service says the worst is expected early Saturday.
