East Asia, Western US Await 'Ring of Fire' Eclipse

Reporter: Associated Press

People in parts of East Asia and the western United States are awaiting a rare "ring of fire" eclipse.

The eclipse will occur when the moon slides across the sun, blocking all but a blazing halo of light.

Early risers in parts of China, Taiwan and Japan will get the best view, weather permitting, around dawn Monday.

In Japan, cable cars and ferries will start running early to allow tourists unobstructed views from the mountains or offshore. Children will gather at schools to view the eclipse with teachers.

In Tokyo, where a ring eclipse was last seen in 1839, the event dominated Sunday's TV talk shows, with hosts providing viewing tips and information about special activities.
