Hempstead Man Attacked by Murder Suspect

A Hempstead store manager was assaulted on Mother’s Day by one of the suspects charged with the 2009 murder of a Navasota liquor store owner, according to police.

Bobby Drews, 59 years old, was attacked at his home located on the 1600 block of 15th Street on Sunday, May 20. Drews says he was working in his front yard when someone grabbed him from behind.

“The next thing I knew I had a hand on my right shoulder, and left arm across my throat and chest. The guy said, ‘I want your money’,” Drews explained.

Drews told the suspect he did not have any money.

“He got a good grip on my throat with his left arm and he said, ‘I could kill you’,” Drews explained. The suspect then punched Drews in the head several times.

After the alleged assault and attempted robbery, police say the suspect fled on foot down Peebles Street.

Drews later identified the suspect in a police photo line-up as 20-year-old Joshua Ragston.

Hempstead Police arrested Ragston Thursday, May 24. The attempted robbery case is still under investigation, according to police.
