Burglaries Lead to Spike in Door Sales

Door part sales are up this summer at Home Depot in College Station, according to employees.

Home Depot Millwork Specialist Charles Langston says many customers have been coming to the Window and Door Department at Home Depot for the same reason recently.

“Maybe 10 minutes ago, we had a maintenance guy looking for a door jam, in order to take care of someone who has been victimized,” said Langston Thursday.

Burglars broke into five homes on Crosstimbers Drive in a week. In each case, the burglars kicked in the back doors to gain entry to the home. However, burglaries are happening across the area. The Home Depot in College Depot has to order more door inventory to keep up with the demand for door replacement parts, according to employees.

“You don't even know your homes been broken into until walk in the gate and see the doors pretty much off their hinges,” said a burglary victim who asked to remain anonymous.

The door jam, which costs up to $40, is one of the first things damaged when someone kicks down a door. Langston says repairs are pricier if the burglar breaks the glass on the door, because then the whole door has to be replaced.

Langston says there is no way to burglar-proof a house, but people can buy locks to make it harder to break in.
