Send Houston Reports Its 1st West Nile Death of 2012

HOUSTON -- An elderly man has been reported as Houston's first of the year from the West Nile virus.

The Houston Health and Human Services Department website shows that an unidentified southwest Houston man between the ages of 75 and 84 was reported on Wednesday to city health officials. The death was the third case of West Nile viral infection of humans reported in Texas this year and the sixth in Harris County.

Texas, especially around the Dallas area, has seen the bulk of the nation's cases. Dallas County has reported five deaths, while Travis and McLennan counties each have reported one.

Mosquitoes spread the virus from birds to people. One in five infected people get sick, and one in 150 develops severe symptoms including neck stiffness, disorientation, coma and paralysis.
