Nate Mason, a 6-5, 195 wing from Des Moines Area Community College, has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Sam Houston State and play men's basketball for head coach Jason Hooten.
A sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio, Mason led the Bears to a 25-8 overall record and a 9-4 mark in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Des Moines reached the NJCAA Region XI championship game.
Mason was named NJCAA third-team All-America, All-Region first team, All-Tournament at the NJCAA regionals and Academic All-Region.
"Nate is what I call a 'Basketball Player'," Hooten said. "He can play multiple positions, can score with or without the ball, and can really defend. We are very excited to add a player of Nate's caliber to our program."
Mason averaged 15.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. For the season, he totaled 502 points, hit 43 percent from the field (188 of 437), hit 23 of 65 from three point range and was .716 at the line (101 of 141). He also totaled 71 assists.
His high game of the season was 34 points against Johnson County Community College.
"Nate has been well coached by B J McGinn at DMACC and will step in right away and help our team with some scoring," Hooten said. "He was just a perfect fit around our guys on his visit, and will be another team player as we continue to put the pieces together."
