Blinn baseball wins pitching duel over Alvin
Five pitchers combine on two-hit shutout

BRENHAM, Texas – Five different pitchers combined on a two-hit shoutout and freshman Eric Wood hit a sacrifice fly to lift the Blinn College baseball team to a 1-0 victory over the Alvin Dolphins at Leroy Dreyer Field here Saturday night.
With the two teams combining for just four hits, the nine-inning contest ended in 1:41.
Kevin Hahn, Michael Vielma, Jason Simms, David Rumsey and Christian DeLeon combined for the Buccaneers’ shutout. Rumsey, who threw two innings, earned the win, and DeLeon closed the door in the ninth for the save.
“They were phenomenal,” Blinn (33-21) coach Harvey McIntyre said. “It’s great to throw five guys and get nine zeroes.”
Alvin’s pitching staff nearly matched the Bucs, allowing just a first-inning hit by Tyler Boss and an eighth-inning knock by Eric Preuss.
Blinn’s lone run came in the seventh, when speedy outfielder Markus Carr was hit by a pitch, then stole second and third before scoring on Wood’s sac fly.
“It’s always good when Markus Carr gets hit by a pitch because he can get in scoring position in a hurry,” McIntyre said.
Blinn will host the defending national champion Navarro Bulldogs at 3 p.m. Sunday in their final contest before the conference tournament.
The Region XIV Tournament will begin May 12 in Mount Pleasant, Texas. Blinn will face Texarkana, the No. 3 seed from the East Zone, in an opening-round game at 1 p.m. that day. The Bucs are the No. 2 seed out of the South Zone.
