LUFKIN, Texas – The Blinn Buccaneer softball team extended its win streak to eight games here Wednesday on the same day it moved up one spot in the NJCAA rankings.
The Buccaneers climbed to No. 10 in the NJCAA rankings, then defeated Angelina College 4-0 and 10-2 in an afternoon double-header that saw the Bucs hit three home runs.
Sophomore pitcher Kaci Federwisch (18-5) threw a complete-game shutout, scattering four hits without walking a batter.
The Buccaneers gave her a lead from the outset thanks to a three-run first-inning rally. With two outs, Thomasina Garza drew a walk to keep the inning alive, and Kristina Davila followed with a two-run home run. Michelle Svehla then walked and scored on a double by Leandra Maly.
In the fourth, the Bucs added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Tiffani McKnight.
The Bucs did the majority of their scoring late in the second game. Garza went 4-for-5, including a go-ahead single in the fifth inning and a three-run home run in the sixth. McKnight, who went 4-for-4, added a two-run home run in the sixth, and Maly and Davila each drove in runs.
The wins improved Blinn’s record to 36-7 on the season and 13-3 in the Region XIV Conference.
The Buccaneers host Coastal Bend for a 4 p.m. double-header at Hohlt Park in Brenham on Thursday.
