Texans Sign Five Members of 2012 Draft Class, including Randy Bullock
HOUSTON – Five of the eight members of the Houston Texans 2012 Draft class are under contract, the team announced today. The Texans signed fourth round picks, C Ben Jones, WR Keshawn Martin and DE Jared Crick, K Randy Bullock (fifth round) and T Nick Mondek (sixth round). In addition, 21 undrafted college free agents have officially signed with team.
Jones (6-3, 303) was selected with the 99th overall pick out of Georgia and earned All-SEC first-team honors his senior season. As a senior, Jones served as a team captain, started all 14 games and was the only player on the team to play all 1,016 offensive snaps during the season. He was the recipient of the team’s Vince Dooley Most Valuable Player Award, a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top center, and was named to Georgia’s Team of the Decade. Jones ranks third all-time among Georgia offensive linemen with 49 career starts.
Martin (5-11, 194) was taken 121st overall out of Michigan State. He appeared in 48 games with the Spartans, including 16 starts. Martin had 127 career receptions for 1,714 yards and 10 touchdowns. He added three touchdowns rushing, two passing, two via punt return and had one kickoff return for a touchdown.
Martin finished his collegiate career ranked second in school history in punt return yards (659), fourth in punt returns (65), and eighth in kick return yards (1,100) and kick returns (47). During his senior season, Martin set career highs with 66 receptions and 777 yards receiving, both of which ranked second on the squad in 2011. His 445 yards after the catch led the team and ranked third in the Big Ten during the regular season. Martin also earned honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades and was on the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, presented to college football’s most versatile player.
Crick (6-4, 276) was selected with the 126th overall pick out of Nebraska. He appeared in 42 games, starting his final 33 games at defensive tackle for the Huskers. He recorded 167 tackles (75 solos) in his career and ranks eighth on the Huskers’ all-time list with 20.0 career sacks.
A team captain for the Huskers, Crick had his senior season cut short after suffering a torn pectoral muscle against Ohio State in the fifth game of the 2011 season. Crick was the recipient of the Big Ten Conference Sportsmanship Award, a two-time member of the Brook Berringer Citizenship Team, as well as a winner of the Brook Berringer Memorial Scholarship during his career.
Bullock (5-9, 208) became the first kicker ever drafted by the Texans when he was taken with the 161st overall pick out of Texas A&M. Bullock left A&M as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 365 career points. His 142 points scored in 2011 set a Texas A&M record and ranked second all-time among Big XII kickers.
The winner of the 2011 Lou Groza Award, presented annually to the best placekicker in college football, Bullock also earned All-America first-team honors and was named to the All-Big XII Conference team. During his senior season, Bullock connected on 87.9 percent of his field goal attempts and set single-season school records for points scored (142), field goals made (29) and extra points (55).
Bullock is from Houston and attended Klein High School, where he earned All-Greater Houston, All-Texas and first-team All-District honors as a senior in 2007.
