The Blinn College softball team’s season may be over after last week’s appearance at the NJCAA Championships, but the Buccaneers continue to garner national recognition.
Four Bucs – including three freshmen – were named to the NJCAA All-America team announced today.
Freshman second baseman Thomasina Garza was named to the first team, freshman third baseman and sophomore pitcher Kaci Federwisch earned second-team honors and freshman outfielder Leandra Maly was a third-team selection after leading the Buccaneers to the Region XIV championship and a top-six finish at the national tournament. The Buccaneers finished the year with a 51-10 record.
This marked Blinn’s fourth consecutive appearance at the NJCAA National Championships.
Garza (Pasadena) batted .410 this season with 10 homers, 45 RBIs and 44 runs scored.
“Any time you hit over .300, that’s good. Any time you hit over .350, that’s even better, but when you hit over .400 you’re in a category all by yourself,” Blinn coach Rick Church said.
Davila (Spring) batted .388 with a team-leading 11 home runs, a team-high 62 RBIs and 43 runs scored. She hit over .400 most of the year.
“Kris produced some big hits with runners in scoring position,” Church said. “She got her hits when they counted the most.”
Federwisch (Brenham) posted a 26-7 record over 221 1/3 innings this season. She recorded a 1.48 ERA while piling up 141 strikeouts and walking just 18. She was also named the Region XIV Conference Player of the Year.
“I don’t know if very many pitchers have had that remarkable of a strikeouts-to-walks ratio,” Church said. “Hers wasn’t bad last year, but this year it was just phenomenal.”
Maly (Pearland) posted a team-high .457 batting average, scoring 53 runs and stealing 16 bases. Her 97 hits ranks third all-time in Blinn history.
“She’s up there with the best there has ever been at Blinn,” Church said.
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association is expected to name its all-Midwest Region and All-America teams in the coming weeks.
