KBTX Media Names Mike George News Director

The following is a KBTX Media press release:

Emmy Award-winning journalist Mike George has been named news director of KBTX Media, the CBS and CW affiliate in Bryan/College Station, Texas.

It is a homecoming for George, who began his news career at KBTX in 1986 as an anchor, reporter and executive producer.

George’s first day back at KBTX is March 10.

“I am humbled and honored to be back in Bryan/College Station and KBTX-TV,” George said. “I am amazed at the growth and changes here at the station and across the Brazos Valley. I have always been committed to bringing viewers news that is relevant to them. I look forward to working with the team here at News 3 to continue that commitment.”

Over his entire career, George has won more than two dozen awards for his work, including a pair of Emmys and a pair of Edward R. Murrow awards.

“We’re fortunate to have access to someone with Mike’s experience, someone who can provide exemplary, proven leadership in a growing news environment,” said KBTX Media General Manager Mike Wright. “The landscape of news is changing, as evidenced by the growth related to KBTX.com and dramatic increases in viewers of our newscasts and related programming.

“Personally, we should never be rewarded or satisfied with mediocrity,” Wright continued. “That’s not for me, and it isn’t for Mike. We can’t raise the bar without taking bold steps to follow-through. Mike is that bold step forward.”

Since his time at KBTX, the Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State) grad went on to KVUE-TV in Austin from 1992 to 1996. There, he served as an executive producer and news manager, heading up a team of dozens of producers and working to make KVUE the most watched station in Texas’ capital city.

From there, George moved from one Gannett-owned television station to another, becoming managing editor at WXIA-TV in Atlanta, Georgia. More than 100 journalists worked under George’s leadership. Extensive coverage of major stories, including the aftermath of the Olympic Park bombing, were a hallmark of his time there, which was from 1996 to 1998.

Las Vegas, Nevada was George’s next stop, as he became the news director at KVBC-TV. From 1998 to 2001, he and his news team of more than 70 maintained a dominant #1 status for morning and evening newscasts in the market, all despite declines in ratings for syndicated and network programming.

Since 2002, George has worked in San Antonio, Texas in a pair of non-newsroom roles, first as chief operations officer at San Antonio Yellow Page City, then in his latest job as regional sales manager for Cox AutoTrader Magazines.

“Mike’s reputation is that of a teacher, noted for his integrity and dedication in leading the next generation of journalists to a higher level of accountability and performance,” Wright said. “We want a news department employee’s toughest day to be the time they decide to leave KBTX. Being fulfilled and led to a higher level of performance will always be more rewarding than mediocrity. Mike expects that high level of performance.”

KBTX Media, based in Bryan, includes a pair of television stations, KBTX and CW-Texas, and its webchannel, KBTX.com. The organization has served the 12-county Brazos Valley region since its inception in 1957.
