American Airlines Freezes Hiring

DALLAS -- American Airlines is putting away the 'hiring' sign.

The nation's biggest airline says it's freezing hiring for management and support jobs because of the high cost of jet fuel.

American Airlines spokesman Andy Backover says the airline will honor job offers issued before April but would indefinitely postpone additional hiring.

American expects to spend $9.3 billion on fuel this year - that's 39% more than last year.

American's hiring freeze is the latest sign of trouble in the airline industry. Two airlines shut down this week and filed for bankruptcy protection, and a third said it would stop flying at the end of next month.
