WHAT: The secret to a healthy vine is all in the roses.
The Messina Hof Wine and Roses Festival celebrates the budding of the grape vine and the blooming of the roses. This traditional viticulture practice allows winemakers to gage the health of their vines by placing a rose bush on the end of each row of grape vines. The more delicate rose bush will catch disease and be affected by a drought before it reaches the vine. This Old World method, now perfected by modern science, is still practiced by Messina Hof who continuously pays homage to tradition.
Entertainment: The Festival will feature a grape stomping competition, music and crafts. Roca Azul, a band consisting of A&M professors, will perform their Latin rock. Mike Lafavour will also entertain guests with a mixture of jazz and country hits. Featured crafts include stain glass, glass blowing, wooden crafts, handcrafted children clothing and tools especially designed for women.
Ambassador Training: Before the Wine and Roses Festival, Messina Hof will host an Ambassador Training. The Ambassador Training aims to educate Messina Hof enthusiasts on all things Messina Hof and will be held in the Barrel Room. Once an Ambassador, the wine lovers can represent Messina Hof at wine tastings and varied events. Becoming an Ambassador earns points that add up to Messina Hof rewards such as a free night’s stay at The Villa Bed and Breakfast.
VIP Reception: At the same time, Messina Hof VIPs along with their four guests are invited to a reception with Paul and Merrill Bonarrigo in the Wine Bar. Complimentary wine and cheese will be served. Wines to be featured include the 2005 Messina Hof Barrel Reserve Cabernet Franc named “Best of Show” at the 2008 San Antonio Express News Competition as well as the Gold medal Champions from Messina Hof’s medal sweep at the 2008 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Wine Competition.
