NEW ORLEANS (AP) - With Hurricane Dolly moving toward the
lower Texas coast, petroleum companies today were evacuating
production platforms and drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.
According to the U.S. Minerals Management Service, at least 49
production platforms and six rigs had been shut down.
There are 717 staffed platforms and 123 rigs in the Gulf.
The shutdowns had cut off 4.7 percent of the 1.3 million barrels
of oil produced daily in the Gulf. It also shut down 5.1 percent of
the 7.7 billion cubic feet of daily natural gas production.
