It's a call Phoebe's Home was happy to receive. Verizon Wireless donated a check for $2,500 to the battered women's shelter Wednesday.
The money came from Verizon's HopeLine program which recycles cell phones and turns them into cash for deserving community efforts. Through this and similar donations, Phoebe's Home is able to provide nutritional meals, laundry facilities, child care, counseling, transportation and education for its clients.
The shelter, founded in 1978, is part of the Twin City Mission and provides refuge for victims of domestic violence in Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Roberston and Washington Counties. Last year, it provided services to 227 women and 273 children.
