BCS Marathon officials announced today that their inaugural event, featuring a marathon and half marathon, is officially sold out with more than 1,500 participants. The race was announced in June, and registration has steadily grown at a rate that surprised even race officials. “When we announced this race, our goal was to get at least 500 runners,” said Chris Field, race director. “To cap our inaugural race at 1,500 runners, 6 weeks before the race, is absolutely incredible.” He added: “Outside of the four major cities in Texas, this marathon/half marathon will be the largest in the entire state of Texas, and we couldn't be any more excited to showcase our incredible community.”
Nearly 50% of the race participants will be from outside Bryan-College Station, which is drawing praise from Bryan/College Station’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CVB). “I’ve been saying for 4 or 5 years that we needed a race like this, and it’s finally here,” said Shannon Overby, Executive Director of the CVB. “The race comes at a great time for our hotels and a great time for runners around Texas. This year’s race has already exceeded my expectations, and we can’t wait to see it grow.”
The 26.2 and 13.1 mile courses both start at Wolf Pen Creek in College Station, and participants will run all through both cities and the Texas A&M University campus before finishing back at Wolf Pen Creek. Along the way, runners will be supported with numerous volunteer run aid stations as well as live music. Officials also expect a large number of spectators will line the courses to cheer the runners on to the finish line.
All proceeds from the event will help children locally and globally through Bryan-College Station based charities Mercy Project and Still Creek Ranch. In all, race officials expect the event will give more than $50,000 to the two groups. “We couldn’t have done it without our sponsors,” Field said. “From our title sponsor, Atkinson Toyota, to every restaurant, business, and company that has made a donation. We truly could not have done this without their help and support, and we can’t say enough about how much we appreciate them. Their generosity is going to help hundreds and hundreds of children have a better life.”
