Twelve Igloo Products Corp. employees graduated from the company’s technical apprenticeship program recently, a joint endeavor developed with Blinn College’s Office of Workforce Education.

The three-year program offers employees courses in electrical and mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, low-waste manufacturing, original equipment manufacturing, programmable logic control machine operations and motor controls. This extensive training qualifies Igloo employees to work as industrial maintenance technicians, maintaining the machinery that allows Igloo to be successful.

“Blinn College is a preferred partner for companies like Igloo that want to invest in their current associates with high-quality training rather than recruiting from outside the company,” said Blinn’s Office of Workforce Education Director Brian Burk. “No matter the industry, we can help companies develop curriculum and certification to get the most out of their current employees.”

Eleven students were part of the program’s first-ever graduating class in 2012. This year’s graduating class includes Phillip Anzaldua, Maricela Arellano, Jose Bermudez, Joseph Catambay, Gretel Cruz, Juan Carlos Gaitan, Hao Luong, Craig Morlock, Dwayne Payne, Victor Ramirez, Fernando Velasquez and Lucio Villarreal.

“The more effective our people are at their jobs, the more we can depend on them,” said Alex Hodges, Igloo’s director of human resources. “That is the difference between just good companies and truly great ones – the quality of their people. The technical apprenticeship program is a continuation of that tradition.”
Blinn’s Office of Workforce Education offers non-credit classes designed to fulfill the specific training needs for individuals, businesses and industry. Through these courses, individuals can master skills in their current position or train for exciting new opportunities in a career-focused setting.
