Bryan-College Station Area Residents Needed For Travel Survey

BRAZOS COUNTY —Bryan-College Station and area residents will be asked to participate in an upcoming household travel survey being sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Bryan-College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to update the area’s regional travel demand model. The travel survey will help TxDOT and the MPO prioritize local transportation projects and plan new roads needed to increase mobility and reduce congestion in the area.

Pre-notification letters for the survey will be mailed to randomly selected households in the MPO study area. The letter will provide background information and inform the residents that the survey is voluntary. A few days later the households will receive a call requesting their participation. For households that agree to participate, a survey packet will be mailed out and a “travel day” will be assigned in order to record their travels for that particular day. The participating household will also receive a date when the vendor will call and retrieve their travel data. In order to collect sufficient usable data thousands of households will be contacted.

To ensure that the unique travel patterns of area college students are captured, students at Texas A&M and Blinn will be invited to participate in a web based travel survey (via email). The email invitation will provide background information, inform students that the survey is voluntary and anonymous, and contain a link to the web survey that will collect information on how much and where students travel.

The results of the household and (college) student travel surveys will be shared with the cities of Bryan and College Station, Brazos County, the Brazos Transit District, and Texas A&M University to aid in their planning efforts and help plan for future traffic demands. The last time a survey of this type was conducted in the Bryan-College Station area was in the early 1970’s. Residents (both students and non-students) are encouraged to participate in this important survey. For more information, call Charlie Hall, TxDOT Travel Survey Program Manager at (512) 486-5120.
