Sending Flowers? Valentine's Day on a Budget

Updated: Tue 6:52 PM, Feb 10, 2009

The National Federation says consumers will spend an average $102 on Valentine's Day gifts and merchandise, and flowers are on the top of that list.

However, many of us are dealing with a tight budget. So, what are your options when it comes to flowers?

News 3 talked to a local florist to find out.

Valentine's Day is less than a week away, and at Aggieland Flowers in College Station you can tell the holiday is quickly approaching.

"Looks like no one is forgetting sweet hearts this year, because Valentine's Day is looking really good," Margie Mariott- Barbee with Aggieland Flowers said.

Roses, carnations, you name it--flowers are a hot commodity this time of year.

However, with many of us pinching pennies, News 3 wanted to find out what you can get for your money.

"We all have budgets," Mariott-Barbee said. "Some budgets are just lesser than others and some are more, so we accommodate every price point."

At Aggieland Flowers a dozen long stem, premium roses will cost between $75 and $85, depending on the vase. If you are looking for something a little smaller, go with fewer roses with other flowers mixed in.

"We can do beautiful Valentine's Day arrangements incorporating roses anywhere from $30 to $35, $40, $50 and up, just not a dozen roses," Mariott-Barbee said.

And you don't have to stick with roses, you sometimes can get more for your money by choosing a less popular, but still lovely flower.

"Assorted pixie carnations, regular carnations, everybody seems to forget those. Those are great flowers for the money. They can't be beat and the longevity is fabulous," Mariott-Barbee said.

Carnations can last up to two weeks and will set you back about $35 per dozen.

If you are wanting to spend even less, but still want to keep the romance, go for a single long stem rose. It will cost you $6.50 at Aggieland Flowers.

No matter what you choose, remember it's the thought that counts.

Aggieland Flowers has recently changed locations. It is now located at 4095 Hwy 6 S. Ste. D. You can visit them on the web at http://www.aggielandflowers.net/ or call 690-2929. The florist does have a delivery minimum of $30, but you can always pick up orders at the store.

Experts at Aggieland Flowers say to keep your flowers lasting longer, "Keep them in a cool place, away from heat and drafts. Also, change the water and if they're roses, make sure to re-cut the stems. If you take care of your flowers, some can last as long as a week to a week and a half."
