Local Moms Save Money with The Grocery Game

Updated: Thu 10:44 PM, Apr 23, 2009

How would you like to slash your grocery bill in half every month?

Two local ladies are doing just that, thanks to The Grocery Game.

It's an online service that elevates coupon clipping from a hobby to an art form. With the program, you can save hundreds of dollars, if not more, every month.

"It's been wonderful, I love it," Grocery Game member Shanna Filburn said.

The Grocery Game helps members navigate the world of supermarket sales.

"Usually I go to the grocery store and save at least $50 to $60 off my total bill," Filburn said.

For a minimum of $5 a month, shoppers get a color coded list of the lowest prices on products they use every day. Black items are the items you buy if you absolutely need them, blue items are your stock up items and green items are free.

Coupon clipping is also involved, but the game makes that a whole lot easier.

"It tells you which coupons to use, which sales to use. So you don't have to all the searching and sorting and things that you had to in the past so it does it all for you," Filburn said.

Shanna used to spend $400 to $600 on groceries a month, but not anymore.

"No more than $250 to $300," Filburn said.

Now she's helping her friend Laura Delzer find supermarket savings.

"We still use lots of and lots of diapers, we use lots of paper towels just like any other family, lots of detergent, so what we're hoping is that we can really reduce what we spend on our grocery bill," Delzer said.

When many of us are having a hard time making ends meet, these ladies make it look easy.

Shanna says her family is taking a trip to Disney World in the fall and has even bought season passes to Six Flags. Two things she tells me her family wouldn't have been able to do without the cost saving measures she's been using.

Laura Delzer is just getting started, but she's no newcomer to saving. Delzer holds a Family to Family Children's Consignment Sale twice a year. It allows local families to come together to provide children's items at a reasonable price. To find out more about the sale, click on the link below.

I've been looking for the best money saving ideas since the beginning of the year, and so far this one is the best. I'm now playing the grocery game and this week I practically went shopping for free. I've blogged about my experience on KBTX.com. You can click on the link below to read it and find more information on The Grocery Game.
