This week I want to introduce to you some incredible music by Nikki Reed and Paul McDonald that has been playing on a loop on my iPod all week. You probably recognize the names I just mentioned because both have made an impact on the entertainment industry before they began making music together. Nikki Reed is an actress whose most memorable parts include Thirteen and her reoccurring role as Edward Cullen’s sister Rosalie in the popular Twilight films. Paul McDonald was a season ten contestant on American Idol and is a member of a Nashville based band The Grand Magnolias. After meeting at a movie premier, the couple quickly hit it off, began dating, and got married in October of 2011. The duo released a single "Now That I’ve Found You” in November of 2011 and The Best Part EP a little less than a year later in October of 2012.
I adore music with an authentic feel to it, something that once you take away all the production elements that go into creating an album, you are left with something raw and real; in my opinion Nikki Reed and Paul McDonald’s music is exactly that. Falling under the singer/songwriter genre, The Best Part EP consists of five tracks, all of which contain thoughtful lyrics, beautiful vocals, and simplistic instrumentals that compliment the emotions of each track perfectly.
What I appreciate most about the EP is that it comes off as a very personal project for the pair, as if they recorded it for their own enjoyment and released without any expectation of people embracing it. The lyrics were written entirely by Paul and Nikki, and the couple has mentioned in several interviews that the love songs on the album were inspired by the relationship they share.
While I strongly encourage you to buy the EP in its entirety (it is only $5.99 on iTunes), my favorite tracks from the album are “All I’m Asking” and “Now That I’ve Found You (Version 2)” (version one is a more upbeat version sold separately as a single, and is also fantastic). Both tracks have very memorable lyrics and are simply captivating.
