Dennis Rodman: Kim Jong-un is a Fun-Loving Disco Fan

(The Sun) - Instead of dreaming up ways to annihilate the West, the Supreme Leader spends most of his free time watching American sports and listening to 1980s disco tracks, according to the oddball retired US basketball star.

In an exclusive interview with The Sun, multi-tattooed Dennis insisted: “Kim is not one of these Saddam Hussein-type characters that wants to take over the world.

“He doesn’t want to kill anyone — he wants to talk peace.”

And after letting slip that Kim might have recently fathered a successor, Dennis added that the chubby despot is only being forced to act tough towards the West by the menacing generals who surround him.

The former Celebrity Big Brother star last month became the first outsider to hang out with Kim at his marble-clad palace in North Korean capital Pyongyang.

And he claims he returned from his trip with a message of hope for President Obama. He said: “Kim told me to pass on a message that he said is very important. He said, ‘Tell President Obama to call me. Because if we can talk, we can work this out.’ There is no need for war. Kim doesn’t want to bomb anyone.

“He loves basketball and so does President Obama, so they have that in common — and there is even more they could talk about if Obama would just pick up the phone and call him.”

But whether the baby-faced dictator is capable of stopping nuclear war is something Dennis admits he can’t be sure of.

Despite being communist royalty — a demigod who is revered by his impoverished people — Kim is seen by many as being nothing more than a puppet prince.

As the grandson of the late “Great Leader” Kim Il-sung — the man who founded the West-hating state and whose birthday is still a national holiday there — he became the automatic heir to the crown when his own father, Kim Jong-il, died in December 2011.

But there have long been whispers that the real power lies with an uncompromising military elite who continue to take a hard-line attitude towards the West.

In the past month, 30-year-old Kim has been photographed leading army exercises, while state media has announced the ending of the 1953 armistice with South Korea — a historic move signalling a significant escalation towards war.

At the same time, the regime has carried out rocket and missile tests, flexing its muscles ahead of what some fear could be a nuclear showdown.

Dennis, 51 — who was in the country to film a documentary, Basketball Diplomacy, about a game between the Harlem Globetrotters and the North Korean team — did little to dispel the idea that Kim is a pampered pawn caught up in a terrifying game.

He said: “Listen, you have to remember that he is just a goddamn kid. He’s a cool guy who wears everyday, regular clothes and likes music and sports and stuff.

“His grandad built all this s**t and then his dad built some more s**t but he is a normal guy.

“I shook his hand and called him Kim — I didn’t call him Prince or Supreme Leader or anything. It is crazy what has happened to him.

“When I went to the basketball game with Kim there were 10,000 people in the stadium — and for 25 minutes after he walked in they were clapping and saying his name.

“He kept waving his hands for them to stop but they wouldn’t.

“It was insane, they treat him like a god. But Kim is not one of these Saddam Hussein-type characters that wants to take over the world.
“He doesn’t want to kill anyone — and I am not kissing his ar*e, I am just passing on his message.

“Kim’s not talking about war. Have you seen him talk about going to war? He wants to talk peace — he is serious about that.

“If he wanted to start a war he would have done it already.”

Cross-dressing Dennis — who dyes his hair wacky colours, dated Madonna and was briefly married to Carmen Electra — told how he was treated to a 15-course banquet in the dining hall in Kim’s palace — eating more fish, meat and noodles than most North Koreans see in a year.

The basketball legend who, at 6ft 7in towered over the diminutive dictator by at least 14 inches, sat at the head of the table, next to Kim and his Christian Dior-loving wife, Comrade Ri Sol-ju.

She is a former singer who has reportedly caused huge controversy among the strait-laced North Korean elite because of her musical background and enthusiasm for Western clothes.

The couple are rumoured to have married in 2009 and to have two children, although the secretive regime has never confirmed this.
However, Dennis said: “She’s a beautiful woman, very elegant and quite tall for a Korean — maybe 5ft 5in.”

And apparently unaware he was revealing one of the paranoid regime’s biggest state secrets — whether Kim has an heir who can take over from him when he dies — he added: “She kept talking about their beautiful baby daughter.”

He continued: “The palace was amazing and there was marble everywhere — it was very impressive.

“I won’t tell you if the toilets were made of gold or anything like that, as I promised Kim I wouldn’t talk about that stuff. There is a lot of stuff I can’t talk to you about.”

After the meal the group went into a grand ballroom, where they danced to tracks by Michael Jackson and the Bee Gees.

Dennis said: “It was wackadoo. Kim loves 1980s disco music — he can’t get enough. There was an all-girl band playing and we were definitely getting down.

“I couldn’t believe how much we had to talk about. He loves basketball and told me he’s worn my jersey — No 91 — every day since he was a kid.

“I mentioned Magic Johnson (a US basketball legend) and he asked who that was. It was funny — he’s too young to know about Magic Johnson!”

Dennis admitted he saw nothing of the poverty or oppression that has made North Korea the world’s most isolated regime. He said: “People say there are prison camps but North Korea isn’t alone in that.

“If you go to Korea or China you see people in the street who are always busy too. They don’t smile because they are busy. It’s not because they are miserable.”

He added: “I connected with Kim. He’s as cool as hell. He has invited me back to North Korea for a holiday in August for six days.

“I’m definitely going — I can’t wait. I’ll be staying in the royal palace.”
