(CBS News)- This sounds more like a dream than a "Nightmare!" for Jason Segel.

The "How I Met Your Mother" star and avid Muppet fan is trying his hand at writing stories for kiddies. Random House announced on Wednesday that Segel will release a new book series aimed at children -- titled "Nightmares!" -- to be co-written by Kirsten Miller, author of the best-selling series "The Eternal Ones."

"Nightmares!" is an adventure story about a group of kids who realize it's up to them to save their town from fear, which has manifested itself in the form of nightmare creatures that have entered the everyday world. In essence, the series is about kids overcoming their fears.

Segel first hatched the premise as a movie project. He wrote a screenplay years ago, though it got stuck in turnaround, so Segel took it back and reverse-adapted it into a book.

"Ultimately, it's a story about learning that we can accomplish anything, as long as we are brave enough to try," said Segel in a press release. "These are the types of stories that always inspired me."

This is not the actor's first time putting on his writing cap; he penned the script for "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," as well as the script for his pet project, "The Muppets."

"Jason Segel has the perfect voice to write for children," said Random House Children's Book president/publisher Barbara Marcus. "Nightmares! is inventive, genuine, and relatable to middle-grade readers. We're thrilled to see Jason's creative vision translated to the page, and can't wait to introduce him to the publishing world as a tremendous new talent."

The first book in the "Nightmares!" series is scheduled for release in fall 2014.
