“Safety Not Guaranteed” is an independent comedy that in addition to being incredibly unique and humorous is also available for instant streaming on Netflix. After reading several comments online of how much people enjoyed the film, I had to see it for myself. The story is centered on Darius (Aubrey Plaza) who is an intern at a magazine based in Seattle, Washington. The plot begins to form early on when she and her co-workers stumbled upon an odd classified ad seeking a companion for time travel.
Seeing an opportunity for an interesting story, Darius, another intern Arnau, and the staff-writer Jeff seek out the author of the classified ad to find their intentions in posting the advertisement. Do they really believe they can time travel? Is it a prank? And, who is the author of the post? The mismatched colleagues road trip to the hometown of the author with the idea of interviewing an interesting character, however what they find is far more exciting.
Although there is a definite sci-fi element to the film with time-travel being a focal point, “Safety Not Guaranteed” is so much more than that. Ultimately the film’s purpose is illustrating that love can be difficult. There is a definite risk involved in being in a relationship, where you are vulnerable with a person, and you have to trust that they will not hurt you or disappoint you.
“Safety Not Guaranteed” is one of my new favorite films. While the message of the film is reiterated time and again, the ending also leaves some of the plot to the interpretation of the viewers. Also I love Darius! She is funny, cynical, and a very dynamic character that is entertaining to watch.
If you have yet to see this raved about indie film, I highly recommend you check it out!
