Today in History: Joe DiMaggio Birthday

Today in History: Joe DiMaggio would have been 99 years old.

Joseph Paul "Joe" DiMaggio born Giuseppe Paolo DiMaggio was born November 25, 1914 in Martinez, California as the eighth of nine children. A year after he was born his family moved to San Francisco a year later.

DiMaggio, nicknamed "Joltin'Joe" and "The Yankee Clipper," is one of the largest names in Major League Baseball history. He spent his entire 13-year, professional career as a New York Yankee, and played an active role in assisting the Yankees to 10 American League pennants and nine World Series Championships.

Individually, he was a three-time MVP winner and received "All-Star" recognition in each of his 13 seasons. He is most well known for setting the record for most consecutive games in a row with at least one recorded hit at 56 games. The span of games lasted from May 15--July 16, 1941 and his record still stands today.

He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955, and was voted the sport's 'Greatest Living Player' in 1969.

Joe died on March 8, 1999 from Lung Cancer at age 84.

DiMaggio's legacy left an impact on the future of Major League Baseball and set the bar higher than almost any other individual could at the start of professional athletes era in America.
