My past two book reviews have been mystery/thriller books so I decided to switch things up a little bit this week and I went with a romance book. While It Lasts is your classic good girl falling for the bad guy. We have all read or watched a movie where this is the scenario, but in this book there is somewhat of a twist to make it stand out from the others and not just be your typical love story. Abbi Glines is the author of this book and let me just get this out of the way now; this book is considered young adult. So yes it does get pretty steamy at parts, not Fifty Shades steamy, but enough for me to give you a fair warning.
While It Lasts is focused on two main characters, Eva Brooks and Cage York, and throughout the book it shifts back and forth from their perspectives. Cage York is the ultimate bad boy and his bad boy ways almost cost him his free ride to a local junior college to play baseball. He got a DUI one night after one too many tequila shots and his baseball coach had to come bail him out. In order for Cage not to get kicked off the baseball team and lose his scholarship he must go to work at his coach’s brother’s farm for the entire summer. This is the last thing Cage York had on his mind for his summer plans, first off he hates manual labor and there will be no girls around, or so he thinks.
Eva Brooks had her heart completely broken 18 months ago. She was engaged to marry the love of her life, Josh Beasley, her next door neighbor, her first kiss, her first and only love. All of this changed when Eva received a call from Josh’s mom saying that Josh had been killed, along with four other soldiers in Baghdad. Eva has a letter that Josh wrote to her in case anything like this ever happened and he tells her to move on and find another guy to love and live a happy life with. Eva thinks this can never happen, but things slowly start to change once she meets the attractive guy working on her dad’s farm for the summer.
Eva and Cage’s relationship is a rollercoaster from the start, at first Eva won’t give Cage the time of day because she just sees him as a complete jerk and Cage won’t touch her because she is the farmer’s daughter. As time goes by they find themselves drawn to each other and slowly start to break down the walls each of them has up. Eva can’t believe the way Cage makes her feel, she never thought anyone but Josh could make her so happy, and Cage can’t believe that he is so wrapped up and attracted to this one girl. But with so many odds going against them can they really make their relationship work and last past the summer?
While It Lasts was a very cute book, it was nothing life changing, but it was very sweet and I loved the characters in it. I loved how Cage was just so blunt about everything and I liked how innocent and sweet Eva was. They were total opposites, but I just couldn’t help but find myself rooting for them to be together. Like I said earlier this book is young adult so it did have some pretty intense scenes between the two, but it was still a good classy book. I felt I could really connect with Eva’s character because I have too lost someone that was so close to me and I found myself relating to how she was feeling about certain things. She wouldn’t want to do stuff that reminded her of Josh and I think everyone can relate to losing a loved one and avoiding things that remind you of them because you just aren’t ready to deal with it yet. But I loved watching her grow and become such a stronger person. At the end of the book I got a little teary eyed because she writes her own letter to Josh and when she is reading those words I honestly got the chills because you can just see how far she has come and you also see that Cage has helped her become this person she was always meant to be. Eva has come to terms with the past and has found her peace and is ready to live the life she was meant to live.
If you are looking for a sweet love story with a little edge I definitely recommend this one. I will for sure be reading more by Abbi Glines in the future.
