Brazos Co. Health Department On Alert After Mystery Illness Kills Four In Montgomery Co.

BRYAN, Texas The Brazos County Health Department is keeping a close eye on a developing health scare in Montgomery County where four people have died from a mystery illness.

All hospitals in Bryan / College Station are on alert, but so far no similar cases of what's happening in Montgomery County have been reported here in Brazos County.

The Brazos County Health Department has now contacted the Texas Department of State Health Services Region 7 and local hospitals.

In a statement released to us Tuesday afternoon the Health Department said,

"There does not appear to be any similar activity in our county at this time. We will continue to work closely with the
state health department and local hospitals and will provide more information as it becomes available."

Doctors at the Scott & White Hospital and Clinic along with other hospitals here are being asked to monitor for similarities in Brazos County as a precaution.

While the patients who died tested negative for the flu, Doctor Seth Sullivan, an Infectious Disease Clinician with the Scott & White Clinic in College Station, recommends people still get a flu shot to limit their chances of respiratory problems. He also suggested to keep your doctor advised if you come down with flu-like symptoms like coughing and fever.

"Alert your doctor and stay at home would be better than going out and about. And of course good handwashing practices and not sharing utensils with folks in the families. And you know the common sense things we do the best to prevent respiratory illnesses from transmitting," said Dr. Seth Sullivan.

Of the eight people who've come down with the illness in Montgomery County, it's unclear if any of them had pre-existing conditions.

Experts recommend you contact your doctor within two days if you become ill.
